ST. LOUIS - Sydney Jones of Southern Illinois and Drake Bushong of Bradley have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. The two athletes were honored for their performances during the period of April 23-April 29.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance during the one-week period.
Drake Bushong, Bradley, Jr., Golf, Marketing, 3.61 GPA
Bushong claimed medalist honors at the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship, shooting a one-over par 217 at the Par-72 Dalhousie County Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to win top individual honors by three strokes. He helped the Braves to their first MVC Men’s Golf team title in program history as Bradley locked up its first NCAA appearance since 1955. Bushong opened the tournament with a four-over 76 and took the lead in the tournament with a season-best three-under par 69 in the second round. He finished out the tournament with a 72 to help Bradley claim the team title by 15 shots.
Sydney Jones, Southern Illinois, Sr., Softball, Sport Administration, 3.82 GPA
Jones hit .417 with four RBI this week while helping her team to a sweep over Evansville over the weekend. She recorded hits in every game she played during the week. In the weekend opener, Jones got two of the team’s seven hits that Evansville’s starter allowed in the 16-inning game. In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, she went 1-for-4 with and one RBI and a run scored. In Sunday’s game, she was the difference maker with three RBI, a hit, a walk and a run scored in the 8-5 series finale win. Jones has improved her average by 20 points since April 18. She is hitting .240 on the season.
