Women's Basketball Player/Newcomer of the Week - Nov. 24

Wichita State’s Marcy Sudbeck posted three-straight double-doubles, including two games with better than 20 points and back-to-back 15 rebound games as the Shockers picked up a pair of wins last week to move to 3-1.  No other Valley player has recorded more than two double-doubles this season.   For her efforts, Sudbeck has been named MVC Player of the Week.  Missouri State’s Casey Garrison is this week’s Newcomer of the Week after averaging 15.5 points per game and seven rebounds, helping seal the Lady Bears’ win over Arkansas State with a 21 point, seven rebound effort. 

 

 

State Farm MVC Player of the Week

Marcy Sudbeck, Wichita State

Marcy Sudbeck posted three-straight double-double performances in helping lead Wichita State, 3-1, to its best start since 2005. Sudbeck averaged a team-best 20 points on the week, including a career-high 24 at Oral Roberts on Tuesday. The Seneca, Kan., native scored 20+ points in two of WSU’s three games last week, and posted double-digit rebounds in each of them as well, including back-to-back career-best 15-board performances against UTSA and Iona. She added seven blocks to her league-leading total of nine. She shot a sizzling 86-percent from the free-throw line on the week, including a 14-for-16 clip at the stripe in the clutch, shooting 88-percent in the final five minutes of games.

 

State Farm MVC Newcomer of the Week

Casey Garrison, Missouri State

Garrison’s 21-point, seven-rebound performance paved the way for Missouri State to pick up its first victory of the season, as the Lady Bears knocked off Arkansas State 61-52. The was 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line and scored eight of her game- and career-high 21 points during a 15-0 Missouri State scoring run at the start of the second half. The Bolivar, Mo., product also knocked down a critical 18-footer with 1:57 left in the game that gave MSU a 54-50 lead moments after the Red Wolves had cut what was once a 16-point margin to just two points. She had a 10-point, four-assist effort against Tulsa on Wednesday night. In that contest, Garrison also grabbed seven boards to lead MSU in rebounding for the second straight game. For the week, she went 11-of-23 (.478) from the field and 6-of-7 (.857) from the free throw line and led Missouri State in scoring (15.5 ppg.) and assists (2.5 apg.), while pulling down 7.0 rebounds per outing. 

 

 

  • Noteworthy...In addition to the league's player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and they include:
  • Monica Rogers, Bradley
  • Senior forward Monica Rogers averaged 17.0, 14.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field as she helped Bradley to a 1-1 record.  Rogers opened the week with a 22-point, 12-board effort in Bradley’s come-from-behind victory against Eastern Illinois.  She had four points and four rebounds in the first half, but made all six of her shots in the second half and totalled 18 points and eight rebounds in the final 20 minutes of play to help BU erase and eight-point halftime deficit.  Rogers recorded her second straight double-double with 12 points and career-best 16 rebounds in Bradley’s road opener at Illinois-Chicago.  She also recorded a career-best five assists against the Flames.  
  • Chevelle Herring, Creighton
  • Junior Chevelle Herring twice established a career-high in points last week, scoring 19 against Nebraska and following that with 24 against 24th-ranked Iowa State.  For the week she averaged 21.5 points per game for the Bluejays.  She was 4-for-9 (.444) from three-point range and 7-for-8 (.875) during the week, while adding three assists for the Jays in 38 minutes per game.
  • Robyn Jennings, Evansville
  • UE senior forward Robyn Jennings paced the Purple Aces offensively this week, averaging 12.0 points per game on the strength of 47.1 percent shooting from the floor.  Jennings followed a seven-point effort at #15 Notre Dame on Wednesday night with a team-leading 17-point, six-rebound performance in UE’s 63-59 victory over Wright State on Saturday.  Jennings scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half to help the Purple Aces hold off the Raiders and post UE’s 11th-straight home court victory.  Jennings went 6-of-9 from the floor against the Raiders, while tying for team-high rebounding honors with six caroms. For the week, Jennings shot 47.1 percent from the floor (8-for-17), an even 50.0 percent from three-point range (3-of-6), and connected on all five free throw attempts. 
  • Kristi Cirone, Illinois State
  • Kristi Cirone scored a career-high 35 points in ISU’s victory over Robert Morris. Cirone was 12-for-15 from the field, including four three-pointers, and was the first Redbird to score 30 points in nearly two years. Cirone became the fifth Redbird to eclipse 1,500 career points with her first basket of the game. She also added a game-high eight assists. 
  • Kelsey Luna, Indiana State
  • For the second consecutive contest, junior point guard Kelsey Luna paced the Sycamores in scoring with her 18-point effort against Marquette in the home opener. She hit 5-of-12 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers en route to her team-leading tally. Luna added three assists and a steal versus the Golden Eagles as well.
  • Katrina Swingler, Southern Illinois
  • Southern Illinois’ Katrina Swingler recorded her first double-double with a 26-point, 11-board effort in a victory over Arkansas State Wednesday night. Swingler shot 8-of-12 from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line, adding an assist and two steals. She leads the league in scoring at 27.0 per contest and is second in field goal percentage at 70.4 percent.
  • Michelle Lund, Bradley
  • Freshman guard Michelle Lund averaged 17.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists while making 10-of-23 three-point attempts in a pair of games last week.  Lund scored 13 second-half points as she helped Bradley come from behind to top Eastern Illinois.  She finished with 16 points, two assists and one steal.  Lund capped the week with a team-best 18 points at Illinois-Chicago.  She made 6-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and also had four rebounds and two assists against the Flames.  Her six three-pointers is the most in a game by a Bradley freshman and tied for the 10th best effort in school history.  
  • Deja Mattox, Indiana State
  • Freshman Deja Mattox had her best game as a Sycamore last week against Marquette as she poured in 13 points and recorded a pair of blocked shots in 29 minutes of action. Mattox hit 4-of-12 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and pulled down six rebounds versus the Golden Eagles.
  • Indy Uhlenhopp, UNI
  • Uhlenhopp finished 3-of-5 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to score a team-high 12 points against Iowa State on Thursday. Two of her three field goals came from behind the arc. She also finished with one rebound and one assist in 17 minutes of action off the bench. Uhlenhopp is averaging 7.0 points per game this season.
  • Olivia Lett, Southern Illinois
  • Southern Illinois’ Olivia Lett recorded 17 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals in a win over Arkansas State Wednes­day night. Lett was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in a team-high 37 minutes of play. Lett ranks eighth in the league in scoring.
  • Val Siemens, Wichita State
  • Sophomore transfer Val Siemens continued to be a steady force for the Shockers last week, helping lift WSU to a 3-1 start to the season.  Siemens finished the week second on the club in scoring, averaging 11 points per contest, including 14 on Sunday in WSU's win over Iona, which tied a season high for the scoring guard. The Circle HS graduate finished the week 10-for-12 at the free-throw line, and pulled down 4.7 rebounds per game, including seven in WSU's win against UTSA, two shy of her career high. Siemens averaged a team-best 34.3 minutes per game during the week.
