Greggmar Swift of Indiana State has been selected as Valley Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the third consecutive time this season. Wichita State’s Alphine Tuliamuk receives this week’s Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. This week’s Valley field athlete recognition goes to Daniel Gooris of Northern Iowa for the men and Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois for the women.
Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the WeekGreggmar Swift, Indiana State, So., Bridgetown, Barbados Indiana State sophomore Greggmar Swift remained undefeated in the 60 meter hurdles over the weekend, recording the fastest time in each race to win at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend. Swift ran 7.95 seconds for the top time in the preliminaries on Friday, coming back with a 7.88 for the fastest in the semifinals Saturday morning before running a 7.98 to win the finals just two hours after the semifinal run. The sophomore held off Purdue’s Brandon Winters (8.02) and Illinois State’s Kendric Smith (8.06) to win the finals. Swift currently ranks sixth in the nation and leads the Missouri Valley Conference. Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the WeekAliphine Tuliamuk, Wichita State, Jr., Kapenguria, Kenya Wichita State junior Aliphine Tuliamuk shattered the Wichita State school record and the Missouri Valley Conference record with her time in the indoor women’s 3,000 meters at the Boston University Terrier Invitational Friday, Jan. 27. Tuliamuk finished second in the race with a time of 9:11.49 behind unattached professional runner Lauren Bonds. Tuliamuk, from Kapenguria, Kenya, broke Desiraye Osburn’s 2006 WSU school record time of 9:17.40 in the event and Illinois State runner Wendy VanMierlo’s 1984 conference record time of 9:17.05. Tuliamuk’s time marked the second-fastest collegiate time in the nation Friday night. As of Monday morning, Tuliamuk’s time ranked fifth in the nation this season. Tuliamuk is the defending MVC champion in the event. Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the WeekDaniel Gooris, Northern Iowa, Sr., Heptathlon, Albuquerque UNI senior Daniel Gooris took the heptathlon title at the Jack Jennett Invitational in the UNI-Dome on Jan. 27-28 with a personal-best score of 5,549 points. Gooris’s point total currently ranks him No. 11 in the nation and No. 1 in the Missouri Valley Conference this season, and No. 3 all-time at UNI. Gooris won the shot put and 1000m portions of the multi-event and took second in the high jump, long jump and pole vault to win by a 470-point margin. Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the WeekJeneva McCall, Southern Illinois, Sr., Dolton, Ill. One week after breaking the Missouri Valley Conference record in the shot put, Jeneva McCall swept the throws titles at Kentucky’s Rod McCravy Invitational Friday and Saturday. McCall once again met the NCAA automatic mark in the weight throw recording a throw of 70-05.25, six feet more than the second place finisher, Jazmin Miller, of Ole Miss. The senior tossed another NCAA automatic throw in the shot put posting a distance of 56-09.50 to take the title. The nine-time, All-American currently has the longest weight throw (77-11.50) distance in the country this season.
