Valley Announces Tennis Athletes of the Week (Mar. 5)
The Missouri Valley Conference recognizes Ben Lott and Maddie Johnson of Drake University as Tennis Athletes of the Week.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Ben Lott, Fr., Drake, Newcastle, England
Freshman Ben Lott turned in a 3-2 combined singles/doubles ledger to help No. 27 to a 3-0 mark on the road this past week. The Bulldogs also achieved their highest ranking in school history, No. 27, this week. All three of his victories clinched either the doubles point or a match win. In Drake's 5-2 win at Iowa, he paired with Alen Salibasic to claim a come-from-behind 9-8 victory at the No. 2 doubles slot that clinched the doubles tally. He helped the Bulldogs to their first win (4-3) at Minnesota since 2008 by earning the deciding tally in doubles with James McKie at the No. 2 position, 8-4. A late addition to Drake's singles line-up against No. 14 Washington, Lott was the last player on the court with the outcome of a 3-3 match in the balance. After dropping his initial set against Jeff Hawke at the No. 6, Lott rallied back to claim a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 triumph to give the Bulldogs the victory. The win represented the highest-ranked team Drake has defeated in program history. On the season, he owns a 28-8 combined singles/doubles record, including a 14-3 singles mark.
