The Men of Drake and Women of Wichita State take home Athlete of the Week honors this week after clinching the regular season conference titles this past weekend. Anis Ghorbel of Drake is this week’s Valley Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. Veronika Blaskova of Wichita State is named this week’s Valley Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Junior Anis Ghorbel helped direct No. 49 Drake to its fifth regular season MVC title in the last six years with a pair of victories over previously league unbeaten Wichita State on Saturday.  In doubles, he paired with James McKie at the No. 1 position to post an 8-5 decision over David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira, who entered the match unbeaten in league play.  In singles, he positioned himself for Player of the Year consideration downing Pereira, who came into the tilt unbeaten in MVC action, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot.  On the season, he owns a 48-12 combined singles/doubles ledger, including 27-6 in singles play.

Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week         

Veronika Blaskova, Wichita State, So.,  Zilina, Slovakia

She went undefeated in all competition on the week. In singles, she defeated Nell Boyd from Drake, 6-0,6-1, and Krissy Lankelma from UNI, 6-2, 6-1. She has an overall record of 21-11 on the season, including 15-7 in the spring and 7-0 in conference play. She has won ten straight singles contests. In doubles, she and her doubles partner Delia Damaschin defeated Gabriela Demos and Manca Krizman from Drake, 8-2. She and Montse Blasco Fernandez defeated Chelsea Moore and Stefannia Sampaio of UNI, 8-2.
