Valley Announces Tennis Athletes of the Week (Apr. 10)

Alexander Peleaz of Illinois State has been named this week’s Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. Wichita State’s Carla Venticinque has been selected as this week’s Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

 

Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Alexander Peleaz, Illinois State, Jr., Havana, Cuba
Alexander Pelaez showed outstanding talent and determination against Creighton and Drake this weekend, allowing him to win 4-of-4 matches in both singles and doubles play. He beat Creighton's J.T. Christian and Kyle Obermeier in the No. 1 spot, 9-7, with teammate Jusso Ojanen. In singles, he defeated Creighton's Billy Paluch in the No. 1 spot, contributing to the perfect match for the Redbirds that day. His success continued against Drake as he fought for his win with Jusso Ojanen in the No. 1 doubles spot to take out Anis Ghorbel and James Mckie, 8-7, before coming out on top against Drake's No. 1 singles 
player, Anis Ghorbel, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.

Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week         

Carla Venticinque, Wichita State, So., Mallorca, Spain

She went 6-0 on the week in all competition. In singles, she defeated Carmen Borau Ramos from Big 12 opponent Kansas State, 6-2, 6-3. She also defeated Kelsey Costales of Evansville 6-2, 6-0, and came back after dropping the first set to defeat Gisela Cairo Baza of Southern Illinois, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. She and her doubles partner Lutfiana Budiharto also won all of their doubles contests on the week, including a tough 9-7 victory over Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien of Southern Illinois, to help the Shockers capture the doubles point in the match. Carla has a singles record of 11-7 in the dual match season and is 3-0 in conference play. She is on a six match winning streak and has won eight out of her last ten contests.
