Valley Announces 2011 Tennis All-Conference Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Missouri Valley Conference has announced the 2011 men's and women's tennis All-Conference teams, representing six different conference schools between the men's and women's selections.


The Drake University Bulldogs captured the Missouri Valley Conference men's regular season title posting a flawless 5-0 conference season record.  Four individuals from Drake were selected on the All-Conference team in addition to the top two doubles flights. The Redbirds from Illinois State claim three individual All-Conference honors as well as the final doubles selection. Three selections for the Wichita State Shockers and two All-Select Team honors for the Salukis round out this year’s men's All-Conference team.


Drake's Mauricio Ballivian was named MVC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, going undefeated against conference opponents at the No. 1 singles position this season.  Jorge Cavero of Southern Illinois has been named this year’s Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, posting a 4-1 conference season record at the No. 2 singles slot.  The men's Coach of the Year honor goes to Drake University's Evan Austin. Austin led the Bulldogs through a flawless conference season, helping clinch the team's fourth regular season conference title in five years.


Coming down to the final weekend of conference action, the Wichita State women clinched the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title with a perfect 7-0 conference record. Wichita State has three individuals represented on the women's All-Conference team in addition to one doubles pair. Runner-up Northern Iowa received four individual honors on the All-Conference team as well as the two remaining doubles selections. Student-athletes from Drake, Evansville, and Indiana State round out the remaining All-Conference selections.


Wichita State's Lutfiana Budiharto was selected as the women’s Valley Player of the Year for the second straight year, after registering a 18-4 overall, 6-0 conference record at No. 1 singles.  Wichita State's Raphaelo Zotter received the Freshman of the Year title after posting a flawless conference record at No. 2 singles this season for the Shockers.  Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year award went to Northern Iowa's Sachin Kirtane. In Kirtane's ninth season with the Panthers, he led his team to an impressive 15-8 overall season record, making this the seventh consecutive winning season under his leadership.


2011 Men's All-Conference

The No. 1 singles all-conference honors and Player of the Year was awarded to Mauricio Ballivian of Drake University. Ballivian takes home conference Player of the Year honors for the second year in a row, making this award his fourth all-conference team selection. The Bulldog is 16-4 on the season and 4-0 in conference play at the No. 1 singles slot.


Senior Timon Reichelt of Illinois State takes home the No. 2 singles all-conference honors.  Reichelt was 3-1 this season in conference play and an impressive 12-8 overall on the season.


Drake University's Jean Erasmus claims the No. 3 singles spot while teammate Anis Ghorbel receives all-conference honors at No. 4 singles. Erasmus and Ghorbel both finished the season with unblemished 5-0 conference records, helping Drake claim the regular season conference championship title.


Tuomas Manner of Illinois State and Adrian Chermaci of Wichita State round out the remaining All-Conference singles positions this season.  Manner went 3-2 in conference play in his inaugural season as a Redbird. Chermaci was a perfect 5-0 in Valley competition this season and heads into the conference tournament coming off a five game winning streak.


Player of the Year Mauricio Ballivian and teammate Anis Ghorbel of Drake University take home the No. 1 doubles All-Conference honors. Drake's No. 1 and No. 4 singles players teamed up at No. 1 doubles this season to win 15 of 17 matches at the No.1 spot and go undefeated in conference action.  


Drake also claimed the No. 2 doubles spot as James McKie and Jean Erasmus take home the All-Conference honors for the Bulldogs. The duo was 11-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference action. This Bulldog team is coming off a five game winning streak going into conference tournament play.


The final doubles selection is awarded to Illinois State's Filip Miljevic and Mya Smith-Dennis who finished the season 7-8 in doubles play, 1-0 in conference play.


Earning at-large spots on the Valley All-Select conference squad are Wichita State’s Vlad Marinescu and Matheus Pereira, Southern Illinois' Adam Fabik and Jorge Cavero, Alex Pelaez of Illinois State and James McKie of Drake.


Marinescu went 3-2 in conference play this season at the No. 1 position for the Shockers while teammate Pereira went 4-1 at the No. 2 spot.


Fabik finished 13-4 at the No. 1 spot for the Salukis of Southern Illinois as teammate and Freshman of the Year, Jorge Cavero, finished the season 14-3 (4-1 MVC). Pelaez posted a record of 16-6 (4-1 MVC) at No. 1 for Illinois State and Drake's McKie finished the season 14-6 (3-2 MVC) at No. 2 for the Bulldogs.


2011 Women's All-Conference Team

Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State earned the league's No. 1 singles All-Conference honor and Player of the Year for the second year in a row after posting an impressive 18-4 (6-0 MVC) record this season.  This is Budiharto's third All-Conference honor in only her junior season, taking home Freshman of the Year honors in 2009 and Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011. Budiharto was also named Valley Tennis Player of the week twice this season.


Laia Gonzalez-Garrido of Northern Iowa earned All-Conference honors at the No. 2 singles position. Gonzalez finished the season 14-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play.


Drake's No. 3 singles player, Klavdija Rebol, earned All-Conference honors at her respective position winning six of seven conference matches and finishing 14-7 overall on the season.


The No. 4 singles position belongs to Jessica Kunzelmann of Northern Iowa. Kunzelmann finished a perfect 7-0 in Valley conference play and is also on a seven game winning streak going into the conference tournament. Panther teammate Chelsea Moore finished the regular season 17-6 (5-2 MVC), which landed her the No. 5 singles All-Conference selection.


Rounding out the singles honors is Montse Fernandez of Wichita State at the No. 6 spot. Fernandez finished a perfect 6-0 in conference action and posted an overall record of 14-6.


The No. 1 doubles All-Conference selection went to Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker of Northern Iowa.  The Panther duo completed the regular season 18-4 (5-2 MVC). Wichita State's Lutfiana Budiharto and Raphaela Zotter claimed the No. 2 doubles spot by posting a flawless 7-0 record in league play.


Krissy Lankelma and Jessica Kunzelmann claim the final doubles All-Conference spot for Northern Iowa at the No. 3 position. This duo also went undefeated in league play this season defeating all seven conference opponents faced.


Earning at-large spots on the Valley All-Select conference squad are Evansville's Kate Chybowski, Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois, Manca Krizman of Drake, Illinois State's Aniko Kiss, Raphaela Zotter of Wichita State and Phoebe Walker of Northern Iowa.


Kate Chybowski went 17-2 (6-1 MVC) at No. 1 singles for Evansville this season, earning her third All-Select honors. The 2010 Freshman of the Year, Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois, had another impressive season finishing 11-10 overall at No. 1 singles for the Salukis.


Manca Krizman was 11-10 (5-2 MVC) this spring for the Bulldogs at the No. 1 position.  Aniko Kiss, Illinois State's No. 1 singles player, went 6-12 on the season with a 2-5 record in league play.  Raphaela Zotter and Phoebe Walker round out the  2011 All-Select team.  Wichita State's Zotter finished a perfect 6-0 in conference action, good enough to take home both All-Select Team and Freshman of the Year honors. Walker completed the season with an 11-11 (3-4 MVC) record at No. 1 singles for the Northern Iowa Panthers.


The All- Conference team is comprised of one individual from each of the six singles flight classes, as well as three doubles teams from each of the doubles flight classes. In addition, six other individuals are chosen regardless of flight distinction and are named to an "All-Select" Team. Individuals earning selection to the All-Conference team via the flight-selection process are not eligible for the at-large select team. The All-Conference team is chosen by a vote of the coaches.
