ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Missouri Valley Conference has announced the 2012 men's and women's tennis All-Conference teams, with representation from seven different conference schools between the men's and women's selections. Student-athletes named to the All-Conference team were honored at the annual Missouri Valley Conference tennis awards banquet Thursday evening in Omaha, Nebraska, preceding the Valley Team Tennis Championship hosted by Creighton University.
The Drake University Bulldogs captured the Missouri Valley Conference men's regular season title posting a flawless 5-0 conference season record. Three individuals from Drake were named to the All-Conference team in addition to two doubles pairings. Wichita State, entering the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed with just one conference loss this season, claimed the rest of the singles flight categories in addition to the final doubles pairing. Student-athletes from Wichita State, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Creighton, and Bradley were all named to the All-Select team on the men's side.
Drake's No. 1 singles player Anis Ghorbel was named MVC Player of the Year, after recording an impressive 4-1 conference record this season. Freshman of the Year goes to Wichita State's Tomislav Gregurovic. Gregurovic earned all-conference honors this season at the No. 3 singles spot and finished Valley play with a 4-1 record. The men's Coach of the Year honor goes to Drake University's Evan Austin for the second year in a row. Austin led his team to an unblemished 5-0 conference record and an impressive 22-2 overall season record.
The Wichita State women clinched the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title with a perfect 7-0 conference record, and will enter the conference championship as the top seed for the fourth year in a row. Wichita State swept the singles flight categories, taking all six spots. Doubles pairings from Southern Illinois, Creighton, and Evansville all received honors as well. The All-Select team represents individuals from Drake, Southern Illinois, Illinois State, and Evansville, comprised of four top-flight players and two No. 2 singles players.
Wichita State's Lutfiana Budiharto was selected as the women’s Valley Player of the Year for the third straight season, after registering a 19-3 overall, 7-0 conference record at No. 1 singles. Freshman of the Year was rewarded to Lucia Kovalova of Wichita State. Kovalova is also an all-conference performer, posting a flawless 6-0 conference mark at No. 3 singles this season for the Shockers. Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year is Wichita State's Colin Foster. Coach Foster led his team to a perfect 7-0 mark in conference match play, and helped lead his team to their third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular season title under his leadership.
2012 Men's All-Conference
The No. 1 singles all-conference honors and Player of the Year was awarded to Anis Ghorbel of Drake University. Ghorbel helped lead his team to a regular season conference championship, recording a 4-1 conference record and overall is 15-4 on the season.
James McKie of Drake has been selected to the All-Conference team at the No. 2 singles slot. McKie was undefeated in conference play this season, and recorded only one loss in the regular season, with an overall record of 18-1.
Wichita State's Tomislav Gregurovic claims the No. 3 singles selection. Gregurovic is in his first season with the Shockers and went 4-1 in conference play this season. Gregurovic was also named 2012 Freshman of the Year.
Alen Salibasic of Drake University takes home the No. 4 singles position for the Bulldogs, recording a perfect 5-0 ledger in conference action and an impressive 16-3 overall record on the season.
Teammates Erick Reyes and Juan Estenssoro of Wichita State round out the singles selections, claiming the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Reyes ends the regular season with a 4-1 record in conference play at No. 5, while Estenssoro went undefeated this conference season at No. 6 singles.
Anis Ghorbel and James McKie of Drake University claimed the No. 1 doubles spot. The pair was 4-1 in conference match play this season and 12-4 overall.
Wichita State's Gulilermo Nicol and Tomislav Gregurovic take home the No. 2 doubles honor, also posting a 4-1 conference record. Drake's Robin Goodman and Jean Erasmus are the final doubles selection, recording an impressive 15-3 overall record this season.
Earning at-large spots on the Valley All-Select conference squad are Wichita State's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Matheus Pereira and David Cavalcanti. Southern Illinois' Badr Cherradi and Stan Rodier, Alex Pelaez of Illinois State, Ahmed Albitar of Bradley, and Billy Paluch of Creighton all round out the men's All-Conference selections.
2012 Women's All-Conference Team
Regular season conference champions, Wichita State, captured all six singles spots on this year All-Conference team. Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State earned the league's No. 1 singles All-Conference honor and Player of the Year for the third year in a row after posting an impressive 19-3 (7-0 MVC) record this season. This is Budiharto's fourth All-Conference honor in four years, taking home Freshman of the Year honors in 2009 and Player of the Year in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Wichita State's No. 2 singles player, Delia Damaschin, earned All-Conference honors at her respective position with a flawless 7-0 conference record.
The No. 3 singles position belongs to Lucia Kovalova who went undefeated in conference action for the Shockers, registering a 6-0 conference mark and overall 16-5 record. Kovalova was also named 2012 Freshman of the Year.
The No. 4 spot went to Veronika Blaskova of Wichita State, and teammate Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul claimed the No. 5 position, both registering undefeated conference records.
Rounding out the singles honors is Wichita State's Carla Venticinque at the No. 6 spot. Venticinque is also unbeaten in conference play this season.
The No. 1 doubles All-Conference selection went to Melanie Delsart and Korey Love of Southern Illinois. The duo were 6-1 in Valley match play and 13-4 overall this season.
Creighton's Kelsey Schmidt and Mary McMullan claim the No. 2 doubles slot, finishing 12-4 (5-1 MVC) for the regular season. Aleks Dzakula and Jessica Raatz claim the final doubles All-Conference spot for Evansville at the No. 3 position. This duo went undefeated in league play this season defeating all seven conference opponents.
Earning at-large spots on the Valley All-Select conference squad are top singles players Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois, Aniko Kiss of Illinois State, and Dora Kotsiou of Evansville. Rounding out the All-Select team are No. 2 singles players Klavdija Rebol of Drake and Emmie Marx of Illinois State.
The All- Conference team is comprised of one individual from each of the six singles flight classes, as well as three doubles teams from each of the doubles flight classes. In addition, six other individuals are chosen regardless of flight distinction and are named to an "All-Select" Team. Individuals earning selection to the All-Conference team via the flight-selection process are not eligible for the at-large select team. The All-Conference team is chosen by a vote of league coaches.
