ST. LOUIS –Receiving four of five first place votes, Missouri State has been named as the pre-championship favorite for the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, held February 14-16 in Carbondale, Ill., hosted by Southern Illinois University.
The Bears (24 points) are the favorites by a three point margin over Illinois State, who received all second-place votes and one first place vote (21 points). Southern Illinois was ranked third with 15 points.
Evansville, with ten points, and Northern Iowa (five points) round out the poll.
Missouri State has swimmers in the top-three times on the MVC Best List in 14 different events.
Diver Wenting Zhang holds the best dive in the Valley for the one-meter dive and a close second score in the three-meter dive behind Southern Illinois’ Sherry Zhang.
Host Southern Illinois holds 11 top-three times on the MVC Best List which includes top times in multiple events.
Pamela Benitez of Southern Illinois holds the top conference time in the 1000-yard freestyle by close to six seconds and in the 1650-yard freestyle she leads by almost 22 seconds.
The Valley’s best will be on display in Carbondale this weekend as the five schools go head to head in this year’s MVC Swimming and Diving Championship.
