ST. LOUIS - Bradley Sauer and Holly Johnson of Southern Illinois have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Goodman and Fortney were honored for their performances during the period of January 21 through January 27.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Bradley Sauer, So., Southern Illinois, 3.289 GPA, Physiology
Sauer picked up another win in the weight throw at the Rod McCravy Invitational last Friday in Lexington, Ky. The sophomore's heave of 66-09.25 was nearly two and-a-half feet better than the second place finisher. That throw now ranks second in the nation.
Holly Johnson, So., Southern Illinois, 3.933 GPA, Biological Sciences
Johnson helped SIU to a pair of dual meet wins over Washington University and Rhodes College Saturday in St. Louis. The Saluki sophomore won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:08.72 and was part of relay wins in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Southern's 200-free relay team set a pool record with a time of 1:36.58. Johnson also took second place in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.37.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
