McDermott Named Freshman All-American
BOSTON, Mass. - Creighton freshman Doug McDermott has been named to the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-American Team, it was announced today. Rather than selecting a first, second, third team and honorable mentions; their Freshmen All-America squad is just one team. McDermott is enjoying a banner freshman season, leading Creighton with 15.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and ranking second on the club in field goal percentage (52.3 percent), three-pointers made (42) and three-point accuracy (39.6 percent). Additionally, STATS Inc., reports that McDermott became just the fourth freshman since 1996-97 to have at least 541 points, 272 rebounds and 42 three-point field goals. Each of the last three men to do so, Kevin Durant (Texas, 2006-07), Carmelo Anthony (Syracuse, 2002-03) and Quentin Richardson (DePaul, 1998-99) were named National Freshman of the Year. Two weeks ago, McDermott was named to the 10-person USBWA Freshman All-America Team. He's also been named MVC Freshman of the Year, MVC Newcomer of the Year, and is the first freshman since 1951-52 to earn first-team all-Valley accolades. Creighton (22-14) hosts Oregon (19-17) on Monday in the first game of the best-of-3 College Basketball Invitational championship series. 2011 COLLEGEINSIDER.COM FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICA TEAM
