COLUMBIA, Mo. - For the second straight day, Creighton could not hold a 2-1 seventh-inning lead and would end up losing 3-2 to end their season in the NCAA Tournament at University Field Saturday afternoon. This day, it was DePaul tying the game in the bottom of the seventh and winning on a bases loaded fielder's choice in the ninth inning, ending the record-setting careers of six Bluejay seniors in heart-wrenching fashion.

Weekly Softball Notebook: State Farm MVC Tournament Starts Thursday
The Missouri Valley Conference softball regular-season has come to an end for 2010 with Southern Illinois (20-5 MVC) holding down the top spot and the State Farm MVC Softball Championship's No. 1 seed. Illinois State (19-5) is the second seed, with Creighton (18-7) and UNI (13-12) rounding out the top four seeds. Southern Illinois and Illinois State each enter the tournament as winners of eight-of-10 games and Creighton is 19-5 in its last 24 contests. This week, eight teams will face off for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament field, beginning May 13 at 11 a.m., and culminating on May 15 at 2:30 p.m. in a championship contest featured live on Fox Sports Midwest.

State Farm Softball Tournament set; Sunday Softball Recaps
Missouri Valley Conference softball wrapped up its regular-season schedule on Sunday and finalized seeding for the State Farm MVC Softball Championship, which will take place May 13-15 in Des Moines, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University. Southern Illinois (20-5 MVC) is the tournament's top seed, followed by Illinois State (19-5). The Salukis and Redbirds earn double-byes and will begin play on Friday. Creighton (18-7) earned the third seed and an opening round bye. UNI (13-12) claimed the fourth seed and the tournament's final bye with its win over Missouri State (13-12) to take the series and claim the head-to-head tiebreaker. Tournament host Drake (12-13) is the sixth seed and Wichita State (10-14) and Evansville (10-16) are the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively.

Creighton won its 11th-straight MVC softball game and completed a three-game sweep over Bradley, while Wichita State avoided losing three at the hands of Southern Illinois with a 5-2 win in the series finale. UNI finished off the sweep of Evansville with another offensive outburst. The scheduled doubleheader between Illinois State and Missouri State was delayed an hour and a half, but that proved to be a minor detail as Illinois State tied a NCAA Division I record by hitting four-consecutive home runs during the second game of its sweep . Drake and Indiana State's series finale was wiped out by rain. Creighton's Tara Oltman became the second pitcher in MVC history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts.

Southern Illinois managed to avoid the inclement weather that hampered the majority of Missouri Valley Conference teams on its way to its first 4-0 start in league play since 2006. Saluki right-hander Danielle Glosson picked up all four wins without allowing a run and striking out 23 hitters. Creighton, the three-time defending regular-season champion, also opened Valley play unscathed, taking two games from Indiana State. 2009 MVC Player of the Year Renae Sinkler was nearly perfect at the plate, hitting .750 with an on base percentage of .875 and a slugging percentage of 2.250, all league bests last week. Her two home runs gave her 39 for her career, which is the Creighton all-time mark and leaves her one home run shy of becoming the second MVC player to amass 40 career home runs.

No. 20 Tennessee Softball Out-Homers Illinois State; Missouri Tops Missouri State
Home runs were the theme of the Illinois State and No. 20 Tennessee softball game Saturday night at the First Tennessee Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Michelle Henderson, Caiti Kopp and Kara Nelson each hit a shot out of the park, but four Tennessee home runs in the game lifted the Lady Vols over the Redbirds, 6-5.

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK - The Drake softball team earned a pair of wins to open the Razorback Invitational, Friday. The Bulldogs topped Southern Miss. 8-2 behind another solid outing by junior pitcher Jenna DeLong, then earned a 2-1 victory over No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette with a sixth-inning suicide squeeze executed perfectly by Molly McClelland.

Another successful non-conference weekend for MVC teams saw the league push its record to 55-42 overall (.567 win pct.) through three weeks of play in the 2010 season. All 10 teams are in action this weekend, highlighted by Creighton and UNI's trip to the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., where each will see #7 Arizona State. UNI will also tangle with #2 Arizona in a single game on March 4. Illinois State will continue its challenging schedule with a trip to Knoxville, Tenn., which includes a pair of games with #21 Tennessee and a game with Texas.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Junior Kate Singler (Witt, Ill./Nokomis/Heartland C.C.) drove in her team-leading ninth RBI of the year, but Bradley managed just three hits against 22nd-ranked Tennessee Saturday as the Lady Vols posted a 12-2 victory against the Braves at the Troy Cox Classic. Bradley fell to 5-4 on the season, while Tennessee improved to 3-2 on the year.

Bluejays Win Pitcher's Duel, 2-1, Over No. 15 Northwestern
TEMPE, Ariz. - Creighton won its third straight game to conclude play at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State, knocking off 15th-ranked Northwestern 2-1 Sunday morning. Bluejay All-American pitcher Tara Oltman won the duel between aces with better than 900 career strikeouts each, as the Jays took advantage of an error by Northwestern hurler Lauren Delaney to improve to 3-3 on the season.

Coaches Select Creighton as Missouri Valley Conference Softball Favorite
ST. LOUIS -- Creighton, winners of the past three regular-season MVC titles, has been selected as the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley Conference for a third consecutive season in a vote of the league's head softball coaches. The Bluejays received eight first place votes and 97 of a possible 100 points in the poll. Southern Illinois (one first place vote, 85 points), Northern Iowa (77 points) and Drake (one first place vote, 71 points) round out the top four.
