Drake 4, Wichita State 0
Drake University won its third-straight and fifth overall Missouri Valley Conference Tennis title Sunday. The Bulldogs took a 4-0 win over Wichita State to take the trophy. Drake becomes the first team to win three titles in a row since Indiana State won four-straight from 1999-2002. Drake’s doubles duo of Dalibor Pavic and Maor Zirkin was back to its dominant self after falling to SIU’s Anton Leonenko and Lucas Waked during the semifinals. Pavic and Zirkin topped Wichita State’s top team of Tiago Espirito Santo and Matt Teivans 8-0. Freshman of the Year Mauricio Ballivian teamed with Ivan Mendoza at No. 3 doubles to take an 8-5 win over Kevin Gardner and Jonathan Obrist to seize the doubles point. Zirkin continued the Bulldogs’ domination with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Albert Ballesta at No. 2. Bokang Setshogo topped Jonathan Obrist 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, while Ivan Mendoza blanked Matt Teivans 6-0, 6-0. Drake earns the MVC’s automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships. |
