Five Valley Baseball Athletes Named to the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America Team
Ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte of Creighton and RHP Aaron Shafer, 3B Conor Gillaspie, and LHPs Rob Musgrave and Anthony Capra from Wichita State were named to Louisville Slugger's pre-season All-America teams. Venditte, Shafer and Gillaspie earned second team nods, while Musgrave and Capra were named to the third team. Venditte was named the MVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading Creighton to its first-ever tournament championship. He also earned first-team all-MVC honors, second-team All-America laurels from Rivals.com, third-team All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball and was named the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after his performance at the MVC Tournament. Venditte finished with an 8-2 record and led the team with 99 strikeouts in 95.2 innings in 2007. Gillaspie, from Omaha, Neb., hit .325 with 24 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 63 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 2007. Last season he earned his second-straight first team all-Valley honor and this summer he earned MVP honors in the Cape Cod League. Shafer, a right-handed pitcher from Moscow Mills, Mo., went 8-2 with a 2.23 ERA and 90 strikeouts last season. Musgrave, a left-handed pitcher from Carbondale, Kan., went 10-2 with a 2.59 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 2007, while Capra, a left-handed pitcher from Arvada, Colo., went 7-1 with a 1.76 ERA and 77 strikeouts.
