ST. LOUIS -- Tara Oltman of Creighton University and Rob Musgrave of Wichita State University have been selected the Prairie Farms Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.  Oltman and Musgrave were honored for their performances during the period of April 28-May 4.  Now in its ninth year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies.  On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

“Prairie Farms and its family of dairies have been the only sponsors of this worthwhile endeavor by the Missouri Valley Conference,” said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley.  “We are grateful for Prairie Farms continued recognition of our student-athletes for their athletic performance and their academic success.”

A pitcher for the Creighton softball team, Oltman, a sophomore from Cortland, Neb., concluded her amazing regular season with two victories and a save, as the Bluejays swept a three-game series from Missouri State last weekend (6-1 and 4-0 on May 3 and 1-0 on May 4).

The MVC Pitcher of the Week, Oltman, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in English/secondary education, allowed just one run and eight hits in 15.2 innings pitched while fashioning a 2-0 record with a 0.45 earned-run average in three appearances.  The 1-0 shutout was her 13th of the season and her 31st triumph of the campaign, tying the MVC single-season record for victories.

A pitcher for the 10th-ranked Wichita State baseball team, Musgrave, a senior from Carbondale, Kan., pitched a complete-game 6-1 victory on May 2 in the first contest of the Shockers’ three-game sweep of Northern Iowa.

The MVC Pitcher of the Week, Musgrave, who has a 3.76 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, yielded just one run on five hits in his nine innings, walked one and struck out 12.  In fact, he notched a strikeout in each inning, including striking out the side in the fifth inning.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.  In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
