ST. LOUIS -- Tara Oltman of Creighton University and Todd Obergoenner of Southern Illinois University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.  Oltman and Obergoenner were honored for their performances during the period of April 7-13.  Now in its ninth year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies.  On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

“Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to recognize our top student-athletes,” said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley.  “Our student-athletes are our most visible representatives, and we’re happy to honor Tara (Oltman) and Todd (Obergoenner) for their athletic and academic achievements.”

A pitcher for the Creighton softball team, Oltman, a sophomore from Cortland, Neb., compiled a 3-0 record with a 0.79 earned-run average, as the Bluejays defeated Nebraska (13-1 on April 9) and swept a double-header from Evansville (6-1 and 4-3 on April 13).

The MVC Pitcher of the Week, Oltman, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in English, struck out eight and registered a five-inning, two-hitter against Nebraska to improve to 4-1 all-time against the Cornhuskers.  In the first game versus Evansville, she yielded two hits and fanned eight, while in the finale, she tossed 5.2 innings of shutout relief, giving up four hits and fanning four to pick up the win.

A member of the Southern Illinois men’s golf team, Obergoenner, a junior from Cape Girardeau, Mo., tied for second overall at the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., Monday-Tuesday, April 7-8, with a career-best and the third-lowest 54-hole total in SIU men’s golf history at 12-under-par 204.

The MVC Golfer of the Week, Obergoenner, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in university studies, opened the tourney on April 7 at the par-72, 6,903-yard Sage Meadow Golf Club, with 4-under-par 68 and 3-under 69 to list tied for sixth at 7-under heading into the final round.  He fired a final-round 5-under-par 67, which tied the SIU mark for the lowest-third round score in program history.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.  In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
