ST. LOUIS -- Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois University and Sara Lungren of Wichita State University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Schirmer and Lungren were honored for their performances during the period of October 22-28. Now in its ninth year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
"Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes," said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley. "Our student-athletes are the league’s best representatives, and we’re happy to recognize Jeff (Schirmer) and Sara (Lungren) for their athletic and academic achievements."
A member of the Southern Illinois men’s cross country team, Schirmer, a sophomore from Troy, Ill., led the Salukis to the team title of the 2007 State Farm MVC Cross Country Championship at Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday, October 27.
Schirmer, who has a 3.21 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, captured individual champion honors on the 8K course in a time of 24:31.47. Schirmer became the sixth different Saluki male runner to take an MVC individual cross country title dating back to 1983 and gave SIU its second-straight individual crown.
An outside hitter for the Wichita State women’s volleyball team, Lungren, a senior from Caldwell, Kan., powered the Shockers to a pair of road wins at Southern Illinois (3-1 on Oct. 26) and Evansville (3-0 on Oct. 27).
Lungren, who has a 3.838 cumulative grade-point average in elementary education, averaged 4.14 kills, 3.29 digs and 0.71 service aces per game while hitting .400 for the two matches. The Valley’s Offensive Player of the Week, Lungren compiled double-doubles in both matches, including 16 kills and 13 digs at SIU and 13 kills and 10 digs at Evansville.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
