WSOC: No. 30 Marquette Tops Indiana State; Preseason Favorite Evansville Improves to 2-0
Indiana State dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 30 Marquette (SoccerBuzz) on Sunday, while preseason favorite Evansville improved to 2-0 after a 3-2 win over Jacksonville State in the final round of the Wright State Tournament.
The Marquette University Golden Eagles scored their first goal less than 30 seconds into the second half. Anna Sawicki got the ball past ISU goalkeeper Rachel Rudzis for the go-ahead goal.
The Sycamores had a few opportunities to tie the score, but their best chance came when freshmen Caitlin Noble fired a shot at Marquette’s keeper, Laura Boyer. Boyer came up huge and made a big save to keep the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.
MU notched their second goal with only a couple of minutes left in the game. The Sycamores were pressing forward, trying to get numbers up to tie the score. The Golden Eagles broke up the attack, countered Indiana State, and netted their second goal off of a free kick at the 88-minute mark. Ashley Bares was credited with the goal, her first of the season.
Two Sycamores were recognized for their performance this weekend. Junior Jennifer Milward and senior Meaghan Gaffney were voted to the All-Tournament team.
