Missouri State's Ross Detwiler was the sixth pick overall in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. The left hander from Wentzville, Mo. was a second-team all-conference starting pitcher this year. He is the league's highest draft pick since Mike Pelfrey of Wichita State was chosen ninth overall by the Mets in 2005.

Lam was honored for his performance during the period of May 14-20. The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies, honors conference student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. The program began during the 1999-00 academic year.

Creighton's Servais Named MVC Coach of the Year
St. Louis, Mo. -- Creighton's head baseball coach Ed Servais was named the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Coach of the Year, by a vote of the league's head coaches. This is the third time in four years the Bluejays' skipper has earned the league's top coaching honor. The last time a Valley coach won the honor three times in four years was when Gene Stephenson of Wichita State was named the coach of the year in 1991, 1992 & 1994.

Former Valley Players Rock The Rocket
Earlier this week, former University of Evansville standout Erik Lis said that he could not wait to face future Hall of Fame pitcher Roger Clemens in Friday's night's game between Lis' Fort Myers Miracle and the Tampa Yankees. For Lis, his first at-bat on Friday was more than worth the wait. Also in that game, former Valley players had two of the three hits off of Clemens, as former Missouri State infielder Toby Gardenhire also had a double off of the Rocket.

Despite potential severe weather and maybe even snow in the Midwest, three of four Valley series got underway as Evansville, Illinois State and Creighton won opening-weekend games. UE downed Northern Iowa, the Redbirds topped Indiana State and Bradley fell in Omaha. No. 11 Wichita State at Southern Illinois was postponed Friday due to inclement weather and will resume with a doubleheader on Saturday.

Four Arkansas pitchers combined for four hits and 11 strikeouts as the ninth-ranked Razorbacks (26-10) blanked the Missouri State (19-14) baseball team by a 2-0 score in non-conference action Tuesday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville. Wichita State came from behind to defeat Nebraska 5-3 while Creighton scored early against Kansas State and held on for a 3-1 win.

No. 8 Wichita State evened the weekend set and pulled even in the standings with Creighton, using a bases loaded walk in the last of the ninth to pick up a 2-1 win at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. Missouri State got a complete game from Scott Carroll in a 3-1 win over Bradley and Evansville put up nine runs in another road win at Indiana State. UNI and Illinois State split a doubleheader with Illinois State claiming the completion of game one and UNI grabbing game two.

BSB: Creighton's Ogden Scores Game-Winning Run, Bluejays Beat No. 25 Missouri
Creighton senior shortstop Chad Ogden hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning that platted Robbie Knight from first, leading the Creighton baseball team to a 4-3 victory over the red-hot Missouri Tigers Tuesday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. With one out, Ogden took a 3-2 pitch and knocked it off the wall in left field giving Knight plenty of time to round the bases from first as Bluejays won their third-straight game and gave the Tigers only their second loss in 16 games.

No. 11 Wichita State and Southern Illinois each earned opening weekend conference sweeps of their opponents as the Shockers downed Indiana State Sunday, 12-3, and SIU won 9-4 over Illinois State. Creighton was an eight-run winner over Evansville, taking two-of-three in the series, while Missouri State jumped to an 11-1 lead and hung on for a 12-7 victory over UNI. The Shockers and Salukis improve to 3-0 in league play.

#9 Oregon State Beats Evansville in Series Opener
The sixth inning started out so well for the 25th ranked University of Evansville baseball team, and ended so poorly. The result was a 9-2 victory in the home opener for ninth ranked Oregon State Thursday on a night when the Beavers' 2006 NCAA championship team was recognized. The two teams continue their three-game series Friday.

BSB: Heartbreaking Loss for Illinois State at Arkansas
Through seven innings at Baum Stadium on Sunday, there was definitely a feeling of worry in the hearts of the Arkansas fans as their Razorbacks were down 7-1 to the Illinois State baseball team. However, for the second game in a row, Arkansas (9-3) put up a huge inning with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth that eventually propelled the Razorbacks to a 9-8 victory in 10 innings over the Redbirds (2-4) in front of 6,769 spectators.

There is no doubt that Illinois State freshman pitcher Ryan Copeland will ever forget his first collegiate win. On Saturday, the young left-hander battled for seven innings and gave up 10 runs, six of which were earned, but still held on to earn the victory for ISU (2-3) over No. 5 ranked Arkansas (8-3) in front of 6,876 fans at Baum Stadium.

Illinois State Sweeps Initial Player/Pitcher of the Week Honors
Illinois State's Kevin Dubler and Eric Theisen earned MVC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in the initial weekly awards as the 2007 Valley Baseball season is underway. Dubler hit two doubles, a triple and home run in three starts behind the plate for the Redbirds, who competed at the UTA Invitational, while Theisen pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out nine batters in his first start since missing all of last season with a shoulder injury.

Indiana State Tabs Lindsay Meggs as Baseball Coach
Indiana State University Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today (July 20) that Lindsay Meggs has been hired as head coach of the Sycamore Baseball program. Meggs comes to ISU after spending the past 13 seasons as head coach at California State-Chico where he guided the Wildcats to two NCAA Division II National Championships and compiled an overall record of 538-228-4.

MSU's Howard Wins Home Run Derby
Former Missouri State University slugger Ryan Howard has taken his baseball hitting power to a new level. The Philadelphia Phillies' first baseman won the Home Run Derby competition Monday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh in a prelude to Tuesday night's All-Star game. He beat out David Wright of the New York Mets in the last round.
