Zach Daeges of Creighton and Damon Sublett of Wichita State have been named All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Daeges earned second-team honors while Sublett is a third-team honoree.

Seventeen Missouri Valley Conference baseball student-athletes were drafted in the 2006 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Valley's best pick Brett Sinkbeil of Missouri State was the 19th overall draft pick of this year. He is the highest drafted Bear ever.

Gabe Bauer of Evansville and Zach Daeges of Creighton top the voting for the first-team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Baseball squad, determined by a vote of league sports information directors. #$%^ #$%^Both Bauer and Daeges were unanimous first-team picks in 2006 while this is Daeges' second-straight first-team honor.

Baseball Season Ends in Regional Championship Play
The University of Evansville and Wichita State both ended their respective baseball seasons on Monday night after suffering losses in each school's NCAA Regional Championship game. UE fell to South Carolina, 5-1, while the Shockers lost to Oklahoma, 7-6. The Aces end their season at 43-22 while Wichita State's 2006 season at 46-22.

Evansville, Wichita State Reach NCAA Regional Final
Wichita State and Evansville will both be playing for the chance to advance to an NCAA Super Regional on Monday as the Shockers, suffering their first loss at the Norman Regional on Sunday, will play Oklahoma Monday while Evansville battled through two, double-digit wins to play to advance its season on Monday as well, against South Carolina.

WSU Reaches Regional Championship; Evansville Stays Alive
Wichita State and Evansville were both winners on Saturday in NCAA Baseball action as the Shockers advance to the championship of game of the Regional after an 18-8 battle with TCU and UE's Robbie Minor hit a grand slam to lift the Aces past Lehigh. The Aces lost their opening game on Saturday (vs. South Carolina) after that game had been postponed Friday due to poor weather.

Shockers Beat Houston in NCAA Regional Action
Wichita State, the number three seed in the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, was victorious in its first game against No. 2 Houston on Friday afternoon. The Shockers held on for a 2-1 win after pounding out eight hits.

Shafer Named Louisville Slugger All-American
Aaron Shafer of Wichita State, the league's 2006 Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year, has been named a third-team Louisville Slugger All-American announced Friday and voted on by the staff of Collegiate Baseball.

Daeges Repeats as Academic All-American
Creighton baseball player Zach Daeges has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. The senior from Harlan, Iowa, was a third-team choice for the second consecutive year and owns a 3.308 GPA in Accounting. He graduated from Creighton earlier this month.

Shockers, Aces Earn NCAA Baseball Bids
The Missouri Valley Conference Regular-Season and Tournament Champion, the University of Evansville, and Wichita State will represent The Valley in the field of 64 teams competing in the 2006 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. This is the second-straight season for two MVC schools to participate while Evansville is making its first appearance since 2000, and Wichita State, an at-large pick, is making its fifth straight appearance.

Sublett Earns All-America Honors
Despite having his season cut short by an injury, Damon Sublett of Wichita State was named an All-American by the College Baseball Foundation. 2006 ConAgra Foods MVC Baseball Championship
Top-seeded Evansville defeated Missouri State twice on Saturday to earn its first Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament championship in school history. After a win on Saturday afternoon to force a second championship game, the Aces were victorious again 2-1 in game two and earned the league's automatic bid into the 2006 NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Bob Warn Retires after 31 Years at Indiana State
Indiana State University head baseball coach Bob Warn announced his retirement today (May 26) after 31 years at the helm of the Sycamores. Warn finishes his career at ISU with an overall record of 1,070-745-9 (.587), which ranks in the top ten among active Division I baseball coaches for total victories and among the top 30 all-time among Division I coaches.

Detwiler Throws One-Hit Gem to Give Bears 3-1 Victory
Ross Detwiler threw a complete-game one-hitter, leading Missouri State (32-20) to a 3-1 victory over Creighton (31-20) in action at the 2006 ConAgra Foods Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Creighton will now play in an 11 am elimination game on Friday against Bradley, with the winner needing to beat Missouri State on Friday night at 7 pm to reach Saturday?s championship game.

Wichita State (44-19), facing elimination from the tournament, downed the Bradley Braves (25-30), 8-5, to continue on to play a 3 p.m. game tomorrow against Evansville. The Creighton Bluejays scored three runs in the top of the first inning off of WSU starter and Valley Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Aaron Shafer and never looked back en route to an 11-8 win over No. 3 Wichita State. Creighton advances to play No. 2 Missouri State on Thursday at 7 p.m. while No. 3 Wichita State will play No. 6 Bradley at 3 p.m.

Bears Edge Salukis, 7-5, in First-Round Game
Missouri State scored early and often, as the No. 2 seed Bears downed No. 5 Southern Illinois in the second game of the 2006 ConAgra Foods MVC Baseball Championship. Missouri State advances to Thursday with a win and improves to 31-20 on the season. Southern Illinois will play No. 1 Evansville at 11 a.m. on Thursday, and fall to 33-24 on the year.

Bradley Upsets Top-Seeded Evansville in First-Round Game
The first game of the 2006 ConAgra Foods MVC Baseball Championship proved to be an upset as No. 6 Bradley ended Evansville 10-game win streak and beat the Aces, 6-3. The No. 1 seed falls to 36-20 on the season while Bradley improves to 25-29, and will play either Creighton or Wichita State Thursday at 3 p.m. In the double-elimination tournament, Evansville will play at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

UE's Schrage Named Valley Coach of the Year
Evansville?s head baseball coach Dave Schrage has been named the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Coach of the Year, by a vote of the league?s head coaches. This is the first year that Schrage has been named Valley Coach of the Year as head coach of the Purple Aces. He was named MVC Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1997 when he coached at Northern Iowa.

Wichita State's Damon Sublett has been named the 2006 Joe Carter Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Year, as voted on the by the league coaches. Sublett, a first-team all-conference athlete at second base, is the fourth Shocker in five years to win the award.

Evansville Sweeps Player, Pitcher of the Week Honors
The MVC Player of the Week is Pat Tumilty of Evansville. Tumilty helped lead Evansville to its first-ever MVC regular-season title this week by hitting .588 on the week, including a .643 average in a three-game series sweep of Bradley at Braun Stadium in Evansville, a must-win situation for the Aces.

Evansville's Kirk Bacsu and Missouri State's Ross Detwiler are this week's Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Players of the Week. Bacsu led the Purple Aces to a series sweep over Southern Illinois last weekend by accounting for 11 of UE's 24 runs while Detwiler posted career-best numbers in a complete-game win that he tallied 11 strike outs. #$%^

With one weekend of regular-season action remaining, five of six tournament bound teams have been determined. Wichita State, Creighton, Evansville, Bradley and Missouri State will all be in Wichita next week, while Southern Illinois needs just one win over Illinois State this weekend to earn the sixth spot.

With one weekend of Missouri Valley Conference baseball action remaining, five of the six postseason tournament- bound teams have been determined after Mother's Day competition concluded. #$%^



Wichita State (15-9), Evansville (13-8), Missouri State (12-8) Creighton (12-9) and Bradley (11-9) have all earned spots in this year's tournament while three of four Valley series ended in sweeps on Sunday. Southern Illinois and Illinois State are the two teams left in contention for the final spot in the MVC Tournament while UNI and Indiana State have been eliminated.

UE, CU, MSU and UNI Win in Friday Baseball
Evansville won a crucial series opener against Southern Illinois Friday night in MVC Baseball action, and moved into a tie with the Salukis for second place in the league standings. That win, combined with a loss by SIU and Wichita State, has the Shockers clinging to the top spot in the standings, but just a half game ahead. Missouri State and Creighton were also victorious in league action Friday while Bradley won in non-conference ball.

Eight different Northern Iowa pitchers held No. 5 Nebraska to just three hits as the Panthers beat the Huskers on Wednesday night in Lincoln, 5-1.

Sunday Baseball In Review
Illinois State's extra-inning win over Wichita State on Sunday propelled the Redbirds to a series win over the Shockers for the first time since 1984. In other league action, Missouri State avoided a series sweep by Creighton with an 8-3 win over the Bears while Southern Illinois did sweep Indiana State with a ninth-inning rally over the Sycamores Sunday. UNI's Aaron Jenkins' one-hit shutout led the Panthers over Bradley. UE also powered past IPFW, 7-6.

Wichita State, victorious in 11 of its last 13 contests, continued its winning ways Tuesday night as the Shockers downed No. 9 Oklahoma in non-conference baseball, 9-5. Illinois State picked up a win as well against cross-town rival Illinois Wesleyan while Missouri State fell to Missouri, 2-1.

With their third league series sweep in three weeks, the Wichita State Shockers head into May with a first-place, two-game lead in the conference standings. Just behind the Shockers are Missouri State and Evansville. MSU shutout Bradley in two games played this past weekend, and Evansville won its series over Illinois State.

This week's MVC Player and Pitcher of the Week are Kasey Wahl of Evansville and Chris Krawczyk of Missouri State. Wahl recorded hits and RBIS in each of UE's four games last week while Krawczyk struck out a career-high 11 against BU.

Wichita State picked up another win Sunday as the Shockers swept Indiana State and improved to a league-best 12-6 on the season. In other league action, Missouri State topped Bradley in a single game and UNI beat Southern Illinois. Evansville run-ruled the visiting Illinois State Redbirds to win that series.

An extra-inning win by Wichita State over Indiana State Friday night shifted the conference baseball standings as the Shockers took sole possession of first place. At 10-6, WSU is followed close by Evansville and Bradley (9-7), who are both tied for second. UE won Friday night over visiting Illinois State while Bradley fell to Missouri State. In the final league series being played, Southern Illinois and UNI split a doubleheader.

Wichita State belted out 40 hits and scored 34 runs in a three-game sweep of Bradley last weekend and moved into a tie for first place in the conference standings with the Braves. Not far behind in the standings is Southern Illinois, who won two-of-three games and the series at Missouri State last weekend. Following the Salukis are the Aces, who won their series at Creighton, and the Bears and Bluejays. Indiana State picked up two conference wins over UNI while Illinois State was idle in league play last weekend. This week's Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Players of the Week are Jason Newburger of Bradley and Chris Krawczyk of Missouri State. Newburger went 8-for-11 with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs batted in, seven runs scored and his first stolen base of the season against SIU. Krawczyk closed out all against Evansville over the weekend, earning a save in all three contests.

With the opening weekend of conference play behind us, it proved to be a historic weekend in Valley baseball. Southern Illinois came out of Wichita State series' winners, taking two-of-three games from the nationally-ranked Shockers behind a solid effort from this week's MVC Player of the Week Grant Gerrard. This week's Valley Pitcher of the Week, Collin Brennan of Bradley, threw a gem of a game against Creighton on Sunday to clinch a series victory for the Braves' over the Jays.

Ashley had a career week posting a .462 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBI to lead the Sycamores to five wins in six games last week. Brett Sinkbeil of Missouri State claims this week's Pitcher of the Week honors. He pitched his third complete game in his career when he went nine innings against Toledo on Friday in a shutout.
