Weekly Track & Field Notebook
This week’s Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week are Southern Illinois’ Felix Anderson and Amarchi Ukabam, Fabian Florant of Missouri State and Wichita State’s Desiraye Osburn. Anderson picked up first and second-place finishes in the sprints at the UNLV Invitational over the weekend, including a regional qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash. The senior ran 47.15 to finish second in the race and earned a trip to the post-season. He also won the 200 in a time of 21.29. The senior is currently ranked first in the Valley this season in both the 200 and 400 dashes. Florant surpassed the NCAA regional triple jump mark of 49.05.75 at Saturday’s Mississippi State Bulldog Invite, with his first-place leap of 51.03.50. This distance is also a personal-best for the senior. In the men’s long jump competition, Florant took first again with a jump of 23.10.75. Both of Florant’s jumps rank at the top of the Valley’s best list for the season. Osburn, a native of Lyndon, Kan., finished in third place in the 5,000-meter race at the Stanford Invitational on Friday in a time of 15:53.51, breaking her own school record set last season by nearly 27 seconds. With the time, Osburn is now ranked second in the nation behind Arianna Lambie of Stanford, who beat Osburn in the race over the weekend. Osburn automatically places herself first in the Valley by over one minute and breaks the all-time Valley outdoor record by more than 14 seconds. Ukabam picked up two meet titles and two regional qualifying marks in her first meet of the outdoor season at the UNLV Invitational. The eight-time All-American threw 54-02.50 in the shot and 176-11 in the discus. She also finished fifth in the hammer with a throw of 176-10. Her shot mark is fourth in the nation, while her discus mark is 10th. Both marks are first in the Valley this season. |
