Azis, Feldberga, Traub and Bridges Honored
This week’s Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week are Girtz Azis and Linda Feldberga of Wichita State and Indiana State’s Drew Traub and Janae Bridges. Azis and Feldberga both participated on the track, while Traub and Bridges both were honored for their performances in field events. Azis, a sophomore from Riga, Latvia, competed in the one-mile run over the weekend and took fifth place. His time of 4:01.97 moves him into 19th place in the nation at the moment and places hin into the No. 2 spot on WSU’s all-time indoor best list. Traub threw a provisional mark in the shot put at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The distance of 58-06.50 was good enough for a third place finish, but the senior will wait to see if his 59-02.75 toss at the MVC Indoor Championships will qualify for the NCAA Championship next weekend. Traub also threw a season-best mark in the 35 lb. weight throw with a fifth-place mark of 60-01.75. For the second time this season, sophomore Linda Feldberga broke Wichita State’s 800-meter indoor record and helped her chances of earning a spot at the 2006 NCAA Championships. The Latvian native broke the record at the NCAA Qualifier and finished in 2:06.77, currently the 14th best time in the nation. Bridges improved her season-best mark in the long jump by four inches at the Alex Wilson Invitational over the weekend. The mark of 19-05.50 also set a new personal-best for the senior and puts her No. 2 all-time in Indiana State history.
