Amber Smith, Lauren Cisneros Named Easton-Bell Sports Softball All-Americans
Illinois State's Amber Smith and Creighton's Lauren Cisneros were both named Easton-Bell Sports Softball All-Americans, the company announced Thursday. Smith garnered second team honors, while Cisneros was named to the third team. The awards are given to those players and schools sponsored by Easton-Bell Sports. Players from 29 schools are represented on the Easton-Bell All-American Teams.

SIU's Clifton and Stein Earn Softball Academic All-American Honors
Southern Illinois' Amanda Clifton and Krystal Stein were both named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Clifton, a junior, carries a 3.94 GPA in accounting and was named to the second team. Only a sophomore, Stein sports a 4.00 GPA in Public Relations and was voted to the third team.

Illinois State's Amber Smith Achieves All-American Status
After enjoying one of the most successful seasons in Illinois State softball history, freshman designated player Amber Smith has been named to the Louisville Slugger/ NFCA Division I All-America Third Team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Wednesday. She is the first Redbird softball player to achieve all-America status as a rookie, and was one of just six freshmen honored on the three teams.

Valley Softball Ends Season at NCAA Championship
Missouri Valley Conference Softball squads had better luck on day two of regional play in the 2006 NCAA Softball Championship. Southern Illinois and Illinois State were both able to stave off elimination in their afternoon contests, as the Salukis downed UC-Santa Barbara 2-1 and the Redbirds defeated Iowa 3-2.

Ten Valley Softball Players Named To NFCA All-Region Teams
Ten Missouri Valley Conference softball players were named to National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region teams the association announced yesterday. Student-athletes were honored from nine different regions and a total of 237 players from 116 different teams comprised the first and second regional teams. NFCA member coaches from each region selected the teams and the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams

Seventeen Valley Softball Players Earn Academic All-District Honors
Seventeen Missouri Valley Conference softball players have been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Valley had 10 players named first-team selections and seven members selected for second-team honors.

Shockers Advance to Title Game, Eliminate Top-Seeded Illinois State
Illinois State's inability to push runners across coupled with two Wichita State home runs helped the Shockers come-from-behind to claim a 3-1 win over the Redbirds, eliminating them from the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and ending their season. WSU is just the third team to rally from a deficit to beat ISU this year. The 'Birds must now wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be announced tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. on ESPNews.

2006 State Farm MVC Softball Championship
Missouri State won its third-straight 4-0 decision, beating Wichita State in the title game, to claim the 2006 State Farm MVC Softball Championship and league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Shannon Buslepp pitched a gem, going a complete-game seven innings while allowing just one hit. She earned tournament MVP honors after posting a perfect 2-0 mark in her two tournament appearances. Michelle Armentrout homered for the second time in the tournament, as she went 2-for-3 in the title game.

Shockers Survive, Eliminate Drake 3-0
Britnee Barnett put Wichita State on her shoulders for a second-straight game, and the sophomore didn't disappoint as she tossed a four-hit shutout and hit her second home run of the day to lead No. 4 WSU (34-22) to a 3-0, win over No. 5 Drake (24-30), Friday evening at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha, Neb. With the win the Shockers advance to the semifinals, to face No. 1 Illinois State in an elimination game at 11 a.m., Saturday.

Bears Advance With Second-Straight Shutout, 4-0
Sophomore Melissa Porche pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Missouri State softball team to a 4-0 victory over the Illinois State Redbirds, Friday in Omaha, Neb., sending the Bears to the championship game of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Freshman Jessica Smith went 2-for-2 in the game with a two-run home run in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth, for three of the Bears' four RBIs. Missouri State improves to 39-15 on the season, breaking the MSU record for wins in a single season set in 1994.

Senior third baseman and first team all-Missouri Valley Conference pick Shanna Cook slugged two two-run home runs off MVC Pitcher of the Year Cassidy Scoggins to give the No. 5 seed Drake softball team a 4-1 MVC Tournament win over No. 3 seed Southern Illinois Friday morning. The Bulldogs advance to play the winner of a 1:30 p.m. game between Wichita State and Creighton.

Armentrout Slams Bears Into Next Round, 4-0
Missouri State third baseman Michelle Armentrout smashed a grand slam to lead the second-seeded Missouri State softball team to a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded Creighton Thursday night in the Bears' first round game of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Missouri State is now 38-15 on the season and with the 38th victory, the Bears squad tied the MSU record for wins in a single season.

Illinois State Bounces Drake, 4-2
Strong winds and unpredictable bounces off the turf helped Illinois State rally from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth and take a 4-2 lead, which held up for the final score as the top -seeded Redbirds down No. 5 Drake in first round action at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. This is the first time that ISU has won its first game of the tournament since the 'Birds won their opener en route to the title in 2001.

The Bluejay senior class, gunning for an unprecedented fourth straight postseason title, is now 11-0 in MVC Tournament action.

The 2006 State Farm/MVC Softball Championship begins Thursday morning May 11 at the Creighton Sports Complex in Omaha, Neb. No. 1 seed Illinois State will look to defend its regular-season crown, while No. 2 Missouri State hopes to exact some revenge on ILS after the Redbirds snatched away the top seed from the Bears with a doubleheader sweep in Springfield last Sunday.

On the final day of regular-season softball play, Illinois State swept its doubleheader with Missouri State to win the 2006 MVC regular-season crown and earn the No. 1 seed in next week's State Farm/MVC Softball Tournament. Drake also made the field of six, even thought it dropped its game against Indiana State. In other league action, Creighton's win over Bradley kept the Braves from playing in the postseason and Evansville swept its series against UNI.

The teams will meet this weekend with the regular-season championship and the tournament's No. 1 seed on the line. This week's Missouri Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week are Samantha Fleeman of Missouri State and Stacy Birk of Illinois State. Fleeman had six RBIs in the Bears? five games last week, with a home run and .583 average in MSU?s three-game sweep of Evansville, while Birk picked up three conference wins last week on her way to a 1.05 ERA.

SIU's Scoggins Named Louisville Slugger / NFCA National Player of the Week
After going a perfect 5-0 in the circle last week, No. 24/25 Southern Illinois University's junior pitcher Cassidy Scoggins was named the Louisville Slugger / National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Division I Player of the Week, the NFCA announced Wednesday. This marks her second individual honor of the week as she was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the week on Monday. It marks the second time in Scoggins' career that she has earned the honor. She was named Louisville Slugger / NFCA National Player of the Week on April 20, 2005.

This week's Missouri Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week are Southern Illinois' Lauren Haas and Cassidy Scoggins. Haas batted .467 for the week with a 1.067 slugging percentage and had a double, a triple and two home runs. She led the team with seven RBI. Scoggins was a perfect 5-0 for the Salukis last week, shutting out her opponents as she finished the week with a 0.00 ERA. She has not given up a run in 28 innings and has struck out 36 batters in that period of time while giving up only one walk.

Missouri State is ranked No. 25 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll after receiving 10 votes in the same poll last week. MSU took two out of three from Southern Illinois last weekend. The Salukis meanwhile dropped two spots to No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll and earned 19 votes in the USA Today/NFCA Poll.

This week's Missouri Valley Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week are Amber Smith of Illinois State and Darcy Wood of Indiana State. Smith hit. 462 and led the Redbirds with three home runs and eight RBI in series wins over Eastern Illinois and Drake, while Wood was a perfect 4-0 and recorded 39 strikeouts to set a new INS record for career K's with 371.

Katie Louis led the Salukis at the plate last week, starting all five games and hitting .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI to garner Valley Softball Player of the Week Honors. Meanwhile, Melissa Porche collected Valley Pitcher of the Week honors by posting two wins, one save, a grand slam and scoring a game winner in three MVC games last week. The sophomore helped extend the Bears winning streak to 10 games, including a school record nine consecutive conference victories.

This week's Valley Pitcher of the Week, Darcy Wood, was not scored upon in two complete game victories over Wichita State this past weekend and finished the series with a 0.00 ERA and a perfect 2-0 record.

Julie Darling hit .429 in six games last week with a double, three home runs and seven RBI as she helped WSU to a 4-2 record and its second tournament title of the year at the 2006 Shocker Invitational. Darling started all six games behind the plate for the Shockers, while maintaining a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage on the week. The catcher was strong defensively with a 1.000 fielding percentage and drew four walks along with being hit by a pitch twice, adding to her WSU career record. The senior from also notched a stolen base and scored three runs, two of which came in WSU's win over Missouri State on Sunday to secure the tournament title. Darling drove in all three runs in Sunday's win thanks to two home runs.

Stacy Birk put together a sensational performance at the Plant City Tournament last weekend and for her efforts was honored with both Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. The right handed pitcher batted .727 and compiled a 3-0 record in the circle as the Redbirds extended their win streak to seven games. Birk is first softball student-athlete in Missouri Valley Conference history to win both Player and Pitcher of the Week honors since the league began to honor pichers in 1988. This is Birk's third career Pitcher of the Week accolade and her first as a player.

Wichita State Tabbed to Win 2006 Softball Title
Missouri Valley Conference coaches have voted Wichita State as the preseason favorite in the annual preseason coaches poll, announced today by the league office. Collecting seven of ten first-place votes, the Shockers totaled 93 points, edging defending regular-season champion Southern Illinois by just one point (92). The Salukis received two first-place votes.

MVC Softball Teams Earn NFCA Academic Honors
Three Missouri Valley Conference softball squads were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Academic Top 10 Team. Bradley (seventh, 3.458 GPA), Indiana State (ninth, 3.428) and Southern Illinois (10th, 3.415) all earned spots in the NFCA Academic Top 10.
