ST. LOUIS - Becca Hittner of Drake and Brad Harrison of Southern Illinois have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. The two athletes were honored for their performances during the period of February 26-March 4.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance during the one-week period.
Brad Harrison, Southern Illinois, So., Baseball, Civil Engineering, 3.79 GPA
Southern Illinois sophomore left-hander Brad Harrison threw a two-hit shutout at Belmont on Tuesday. Harrison threw seven perfect innings and retired the final 17 Belmont batters of the game. No Belmont hitter reached third base in the game, and Harrison only went to one three-ball count in the game. He threw the complete-game shutout in only 92 pitches. Harrison struck out 11 in the win and walked just one. Ten of Harrison’s 11 strikeouts came during his string of 17-straight batters retired to end the game.
Becca Hittner, Drake, So., Basketball, Marketing, 3.96 GPA
Hittner averaged 20.0 points, 3.0 steals, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 54.1 percent (13-of-24) from the floor, including 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three and 100 percent (7-of-7) from the free throw line to help Drake go 2-0 this past weekend and complete its second-straight undefeated MVC season. Hittner started the last week of the regular season with a game-high 25 points against Loyola, including 23 after the first quarter, on an impressive 9-of-15 shooting performance, including making 4-of-7 from three, to go with five assists, four steals, a career-high three blocks and three rebounds. She followed that with 15 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist in the season finale win over Valparaiso.
