ST. LOUIS - Maddy Dean of Drake and Brad Harrison of Southern Illinois have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. The two athletes were honored for their performances during the period of March 5-March 11.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance during the one-week period.
Brad Harrison, Southern Illinois, So., Baseball, Civil Engineering, 3.79 GPA
Southern Illinois pitcher Brad Harrison allowed only one infield single in eight shutout innings at Southeast Missouri on Tuesday night. Remarkably, Harrison allowed only one ball to leave the infield all game, a third-inning fly out to left field. After SEMO’s leadoff hitter reached on an infield single, Harrison essentially pitched a perfect game the rest of the way—SEMO’s only other base runner reached on a dropped third strike. For the game, Harrison piled up a career-high 13 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Harrison extended his active scoreless streak to 18 innings. For good measure, Harrison also added an RBI single in SIU’s 10-4 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday.
Maddy Dean, Drake, Jr., Basketball, Actuarial Science & Finance, 3.50 GPA
Drake junior guard Maddy Dean led the Bulldogs to a second-straight MVC Women’s Basketball Tournament championship, earning tourney MVP honors. Dean averaged 17.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, while shooting 52% from the field and 47% from behind the arc. The junior scored 19 points with five rebounds and three assists in the quarterfinal win over Valparaiso, 22 points with seven boards and three assists in the semifinal win over Southern Illinois and 10 points with five rebounds and five assists in the title game win over UNI.
