Men's Soccer Weekly Notebook: Regular-Season Wraps Up, Seedings To Be Determined

Entering the final week of Missouri Valley Conference regular-season play, just three league men's soccer matches remain on the calendar, each with seeding implications for the 2013 MVC Men's Soccer Championship, Nov. 13, 15, & 17 in Peoria, Ill.

Missouri State has already clinched the MVC regular-season title and will be the No. 1 seed in next week's tournament, while Drake has also secured the No. 2 seed.

Central Arkansas has been eliminated from contention into the 2013 MVC Men's Soccer Championship.

Bradley, Loyola, Evansville and SIUE are still battling for seeds. Below is a breakdown of the best and worst-case scenarios for each of the six teams vying for position:

Missouri State (5-0 MVC) – 15 total points
The Bears are currently atop the league standings with one MVC match remaining (SIUE @ MSU – Nov. 9). Regardless of the outcome, Missouri State has already clinched the MVC regular-season title and will receive the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in next week's MVC Men's Soccer Championship.

Drake (3-1-1 MVC) – 10 total points
The Bulldogs are currently in second-place in the league standings with one MVC match remaining (DU @ UCA – Nov. 8). Regardless of the outcome, Drake will be the No. 2 seed in next week's MVC Men's Soccer Championship. The Bulldogs hold the tiebreaker over Bradley (due to their head-to-head victory against the Braves).

Bradley (2-2-1 MVC) – 7 total points
The Braves are currently tied for third-place in the league standings with one MVC match remaining (BU @ UE – Nov. 9). With a win against the Purple Aces on Saturday, Bradley will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s MVC Men’s Soccer Championship. With a loss at Evansville, the Braves could be the No. 4 seed (with a SIUE loss or tie at Missouri State) or the No. 5 seed (with a SIUE win at Missouri State).

Loyola (2-3-1 MVC) – 7 total points
The Ramblers are currently tied for third-place in the league standings with no MVC matches remaining. Loyola can finish as high as No. 4 (with UE and SIUE losses) and no worse than No. 6 (depending on the outcomes of the SIUE @ MSU and BU @ UE matches).

Evansville (2-3 MVC) – 6 total points
The Purple Aces currently sit tied for fifth-place in the league standings with one MVC match remaining (BU @ UE – Nov. 9). Evansville can finish as high as No. 3 (with a win over Bradley) and no worse than No. 6 (with a loss agasint Bradley AND a SIUE win over Missouri State).

SIUE (2-3 MVC) – 6 total points
The Cougars currently sit tied for fifth-place in the league standings with one MVC match remaining (SIUE @ MSU – Nov. 9). SIUE can finish as high as No. 3 (with a win at Missouri State AND either an Evansville win or tie over Bradley) and no worse than No. 6 (with a loss at Missouri State and depending on the outcome of the BU @ UE match).

Central Arkansas (0-4-1 MVC) – 1 total point
The Bears currently sit in seventh-place in the league standings with just one MVC match remaining (DU @ UCA – Nov. 8). Central Arkansas has been eliminated from contention into the 2013 MVC Men’s Soccer Championship, regardless of the outcome of its match against Drake this weekend.

This week's Missouri Valley Conference Players of the Week are Missouri State's Emmerich Hoegg and Trevor Spangenberg.

MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Emmerich Hoegg, So., MF/F, Missouri State
In the game against Bradley, Emmerich Hoegg scored a rocket of a goal past the goalkeeper to secure the 1-0 win for the Bears. Hoegg scored his 5th game-winning goal of the season on Saturday, ranking him at a tie for first in the MVC. His two game-winners in conference play are the most of any MVC athlete this season. He also moved into a tie in the Missouri State all-time record books for second place in game-winning goals. Hoegg’s five goals and ten assists lead the Bears this season.

Other Notable Performances: Lee Grander (LUC); Gabe Christianson (SIUE).

MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Trevor Spangenberg, Sr., GK, Missouri State
Goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg put on another stellar performance on Saturday evening against Bradley. The senior recorded his seventh-straight clean sheet, fifth consecutive conference shutout, and tenth overall shutout on the season. His ten shutouts in a season are second all-time in the Missouri State record book, and one away from the all-time school record. Spangenberg made two unbelievable saves on Saturday to preserve the shutout, and lowered his season goals against average to 0.37, which would rank second on the all-time MVC list if the season ended today.

Other Notable Performances: John Berner (SIUE).
