Creighton men’s soccer senior Jose Gomez earned recognition as one of 15 semifinalists selected for the 2012 Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Wednesday.
VOTE FOR JOSE GOMEZ
The selection of Gomez marks the third straight season that a Bluejay has claimed a semifinalist spot for the MAC Hermann Trophy - the most prestigious individual award in college soccer. Last season’s list included Brian Holt and repeat semifinalist Ethan Finlay who was also a 2010 choice. Finlay finished as the runner-up for the award last season.
Gomez is the latest Bluejay to be named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist joining a long list of former Creighton stars previously selected for the same national honor. Current Creighton assistant coach Johnny Torres won the award in 1997. In addition to Finlay, Bluejay greats Keith DeFini, Brian Kamler, Richard Mulrooney, and Ross Paule were all finalists for the award. Fellow CU semifinalists include Holt, Andrei Gotsmanov (2008), Julian Nash (2004), David Wagenfuhr (2003) and Mike Tranchilla (2001, 2002). Tranchilla finished fourth in the final 2002 vote.
Traditionally, head coaches of NCAA Division I programs with current membership in the NSCAA will vote for their top choices to determine the 2012 MAC Hermann Award recipient.
New this year is a fan-voting component, conducted through LockerDome, which allows fans to also contribute to picking this year’s MAC Hermann Trophy winners.
Gomez is the reigning 2012 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year and 2012 MVC Tournament MVP after scoring two goals at the conference tourney to help the Jays claim their 13th Valley tournament championship and 20th NCAA Tournament appearance.
The 2012 First Team All-MVC selection has started all 22 matches for the No. 8 Bluejays this season. Gomez ranks No. 29 nationally and is tied for the MVC lead at eight assists this season. The senior co-captain stands at No. 82 in the country and second in the MVC with 20 points this season (6 goals, 8 assists). Gomez is second in conference with 58 total shots. He has launched at least one shot attempt in each match this season and recorded ashot on goal in 16 contests. Earlier this season he earned an assist on all three CU goals at Princeton (10/9), the first Bluejay to accomplish the feat since Nov. 8, 2008.
Three finalists for the award will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 6. They will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club and the winner will be announced during the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.
