Creighton's Bohnenkamp Drafted; Minutillo Invited to Camp

OMAHA, Neb. – Two more former Creighton men’s soccer players will look to join the professional soccer ranks in MLS after Tim Bohnenkamp was drafted by the expansion San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS Supplemental Draft on Thursday and Danny Minutillo was invited to train with his hometown Earthquakes.

Bohnenkamp, an Omaha Millard South graduate, was taken as the first pick in the second round (15th overall) of Thursday’s supplemental draft.  The Millard South graduate led the team with six assists and added two goals for 10 points in his senior season.  He scored the game-winning goal in Creighton’s NCAA Tournament win over SMU.  The speedy midfielder was named NSCAA All-Midwest Region First-Team and to the MVC second-team in his final campaign.  He ended his career with the Morrison Stadium record of 15 career assists.

Minutillo, perhaps one of the most unsung Bluejays in recent years, will hope to catch on with the Earthquakes after an invitation to train with the team.  The San Jose native was slowed by injuries during his freshman and junior seasons, but played in 64 games in his CU career, including 35 starts in the midfield.  As a rookie in 2004, his lone goal was the game-winner against sixth-ranked UCLA.  During his senior season, he started 18 of 19 matches, and proved to be one of CU’s most consistent forces in the midfield.

The duo will join Matt Allen (L.A. Galaxy) and Tony Schmitz (D.C. United) to make four senior starters from CU’s 2007 team attempting to make the MLS, as both Allen and Schmitz were taken in last week’s MLS SuperDraft.  The Bluejays remain the lone college program in the nation to have at least one player selected in each MLS draft since the league’s inception.  All the more impressive is that Allen (Burke), Bohnenkamp (Millard South) and Schmitz (Skutt Catholic) are all Omaha natives.

Creighton, which appeared in its 16th straight NCAA Tournament this year, won its second-straight and eighth regular-season MVC title and finished the year 12-3-5 after advancing to the third round of the NCAA postseason.
