Behind a stellar round by freshman Sam Meek, the Southern Illinois men's golf team climbed three spots to finish in ninth place at 31-over par on Sunday at the conclusion of the Boilermaker Invitational, hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Salukis were 36-over par heading into the final round, but Meek personally shaved five strokes off the team's score by shooting a career-low 67 — the second-best round in the field. He had nine birdies on the day and tied for 23rd place in the individual standings.
The Wichita State men's golf team improved as a team to card its best team score of the tournament in the final round to finish in ninth position at The Maxwell in Oklahoma. Grant Bennett and Yannik Emmert led the Shockers through both days, finishing tied for 23rd on the individual leaderboard. Bennett carded his best round of the tournament with a 2-over 72 in the final 18 to finish at 218 overall. Emmert also carded a 2-over 72 to finish with 218. Oklahoma State, ranked second in the nation by GolfStat, took the team title after carding 849 with No. 48 New Mexico and tournament hosts No. 13 Oklahoma finishing tied for second with 855. Wichita State finished in ninth behind its best team score of 286 in the final round to end with 883. The Shockers also finished ahead of two top-50 GolfStat ranked teams, Augusta (45) and Colorado (25).
The freshman duo of Nick Bonema and Justin LaFrance both turned in strong final-round efforts to pace the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team as play wrapped up at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Muncie, Ind., on April 15. The Ramblers carded a 387 over the final 18 holes of the event to finish in 13th place with a 54-hole team total of 1,154 (382-385-387) at the Delaware Country Club (par 70; 6,438 yards). Eastern Kentucky (358-356-362=1,076) edged host Ball State (362-358-359=1,079) by three strokes for the team crown, while the Cardinals' Michael VanDeventer (70-71-67=208) shared medalist honors with Alec Dutkowski (66-70-72=208) of Taylor University after both finished play at 208. LaFrance tied his 18-hole season-low as he carded a two-over-par 72 that saw the Milford, Mich. native finish tied for 38th, the top spot for a Rambler, at 225 (77-76-72).
