Three MVC women's golf teams opened their spring schedules at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Southern Illinois' Kristie Yang led the Salukis to a second-place team finish, taking third individually and is this week's MVC Golfer of the Week. On the men's side, Wichita State's Yannik Emmert used a combination of an impressive round one and a solid day two to pull away from the field to record his first collegiate individual win and help the Shockers to second place as a team in the PRO Compression Invitational at The Farms Golf Club.
SIU shot a team-score of 314 in the closing round to hold off surges from Lamar and Eastern Kentucky, two teams ranked in the top-100 of the Golfstat Relative Rankings. Toledo won the event with a 12-stroke lead over the Salukis. SIU outperformed two other Missouri Valley Conference teams, Illinois State and Drake. The Salukis bested Illinois State by 32 strokes and Drake by 56. It was the Salukis' sixth top-five finish of the 2016-17 season.
Yang, the most consistent Saluki of the tournament, finished in third place. She shot a 79 in the final round to secure her second-straight individual top-five finish. Yang had a three-round total of 78-75-79=232 on the par-72, 6,074-yard St. Lucie Trail Golf Club. SIU's Brooke Cusumano also finished in the top-10. She shot a 79 in the third round. Yang led the field in individual Par-5 scoring averaging 4.92 strokes per par-5. She also finished in a four-way tie for the tournament lead with seven birdies.

The Bulldogs put together a final score of 1,006 (349-328-329) and were just three strokes behind ninth-place IUPUI (1,003). After having a tough first day to open the season, junior Madison Glennie bounced back on Saturday and fired a team-best 79, finishing with a total score of 261 (90-92-79). Sophomore Grace Dunn placed tied for 21st after shooting an 83 on the final day for a total score of 244 (84-77-83). Illinois State shot a 321 in the final round to finish the event in seventh place with a three-round total of 982 (332-329-321). Junior Kiley Walsh paced the Redbirds over the final 18 holes with a 6-over-par 78, finishing in a 12th-place tie on the individual leaderboard with a 240 (80-82-78). Fellow classmate Abby Luchtenburg, however, manufactured the lowest Illinois State score over the three rounds, as she carded a 238 (81-77-80), which was good enough for 11th place.

After nine birdies through round one, Emmert carded par on a light-affected round two before finishing out the two-day event with a 4-under 68 in round three to claim his first collegiate tournament medalist position. Emmert finished with 203 through the three rounds; good for 13-under par. Gage Ihrig continued his solid play through round three with a 1-under 71. Ihrig finished sixth individually, his highest finishing position this season, with 213 through the three rounds, good for 3-under par.
As a team the Shockers finished a clear second with a total of 861, 3-under par, behind runaway leaders UC Santa Barbara who finished with 852, 12-under par. Cal Poly rounded out the top three with 875, 11-over par, through the three rounds.
