2013 MVC Men's Golf Scholar-Athletes
Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Wichita State's Rafael Becker and Southern Illinois' Jake Erickson, both three-time first team honorees, highlight the 2013 MVC Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete First Team, announced by the league office today. A total of nine student-athletes earned either first-team or honorable-mention awards. A vote of the league's sports information directors determined the honors.

Becker and Erickson are joined on the first-team unit by Evansville's Quinn Vilneff, Drake's Devin Leland, Missouri State's Daily Young, UNI's Braden Gaal and Bradley's Daniel Young. Vilneff, a unanimous selection along with Becker, was also the MVC's Elite 18 award recipient, given to the qualifying student-athlete at the MVC Championship with the highest grade point average.

Parker Freiburg of Illinois State and Dane Worley of Drake received honorable mention selection, by virtue of receiving a minimum number of votes.

Notably, three student-athletes selected to the scholar-athlete teams also earned all-conference honors including Becker, Leland and Vilneff.

The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America® program.  Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team’s rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship.

Wichita State won the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship, April 29-30, at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
