This week's Missouri Valley Conference golfers of the week are Southern Illinois' Jake Erickson and Wichita State's Daniela Rugeles.
Jake Erickson fell one stroke short of winning his third tournament of the season and led Southern Illinois to a second-place finish at the Big Blue Intercollegiate. Southern made up 11 strokes in the final round to tie with Tennessee Tech for second in the tournament. Erickson and Jeffrey Miller finished in the top five individually. Erickson, Brandon Cauldwell and Richie Williams all made eagles. Erickson's final-round 68 tied for the fourth lowest final-round score in school history. It was also his fourth round in the 60s this year, more than anyone on the roster. His second-place finish was his third top-two finish on the season and was the fifth straight tournament he has been the top finisher for SIU.
Wichita State's Daniela Rugeles, a freshman from Bogota, Colombia, finished in a tie for seventh place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz. The field included Wyoming, Boise State, Colorado State, Creighton, Eastern Washington, Iowa, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State, Wichita State and Xavier. She shot a 54-hole score of 221 (69+73+79), which was good for second-best in Shocker history. Her first-round score of 69 makes her only the second golfer in Wichita State history to shoot below 70 in a round. Creighton also competed in the field, and the Bluejays were led by Celeste Gassman (76-76-77--229).
Four Missouri Valley Conference teams competed at the rain-shortened Indiana Invitational (April 15). Bradley and Illinois State led the way, tying for 6th place in the 18-hole event. Bradley's Cassandra Marschall and Missouri State's Hermine Greyling were the top individual finishers for the league, as both tied for 5th place with a one-round 74.
Four Missouri Valley Conference teams competed at the Creighton Golf Classic earlier this week. UNI won the team title with a two-round 307-328--635. Amy Anderson of North Dakota State was medalist, firing a two-round 149. UNI's Blair Bonner was the top MVC finisher, taking second place with a 75-79--154.
