MVC Golfers of the Week - Oct. 19

This week's Missouri Valley Conference golfers of the week are Missouri State's Daily Young and Hermine Greyling. Young finished third in his event, while Greyling won medalist honors. Seven league programs concluded their fall schedules with this week's tournaments.


MEN'S RECAPS
Five MVC men's teams (Creighton, Drake, Illinois State, Missouri State and UNI) competed in the UMKC/Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Overland Park, Kan. Missouri State junior Daily Young scorched Milburn Golf and Country Club with an eight-under-par 64 Tuesday (Oct. 18) to lead the Missouri State men's golf team to a fourth-place finish. Young's round was just one shot off the school record shared by Will Hogan and Jack Courington, and propelled him to a third-place finish. He carded 69-81-64--214 for 54 holes, two under par at the par 72, 7054-yard layout.

As a team, MSU recorded 297-293-298--888 to place fourth, just two from second place. Central Arkansas obliterated the field, posting 277-282-284--843, 21 under par and 43 strokes better than second-place Arkansas State and its 886. UMKC was third with 887, followed by the Bears, Illinois State (890), Oral Roberts (894), Northern Iowa (898), South Dakota State (900), Creighton (918), Drake (923) and North Dakota State (945).

Senior Michael Sainz shot a 2-under 70 to help the University of Evansville men’s golf team to a fourth place finish at the UD Invitational. Sainz improved by five strokes from his opening day score of 75 to finish in a tie for fifth place with a 145. Quinn Vilneff notched the first top ten finish of his UE career, recording a 146 to tie for eighth place.

WOMEN'S RECAPS
Five MVC women's teams completed at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo., including Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Indiana State and host Missouri State. MSU won the team title, and junior Hermine Greyling made it a Bears' sweep of the tournament titles as she won a three-way, sudden-death playoff on the first hole to claim medalist honors. She carded a final-round 73 to go with 75-77 for a 225 total, the same as Creighton's Celeste Gassman and McCall Christopher of Indiana State.

ISU sophomore McCall Christopher became just the second Sycamore to either win a tournament or share the lead at the end of regulation play as she tied for first after 54 holes. Creighton's Celeste Gassman finished in a three way tie for first out of 69 golfers before the playoff hole with rounds of 76-76-73=225. It was the highest finish of her career.

UMKC finished second with 304-309-313--626, while Houston Baptist was third at 319-302-318--639. Indiana State was fourth with 947, followed by Drury (951), South Dakota State (954), Drake (958), Bradley (960), Stephen F. Austin (969), Creighton (994) and South Dakota (1038).

Sophomore Sydney Skiles tied for 14th place as the Purple Aces women’s golf team wrapped up its fall season at the UD Invitational. Skiles wrapped up play on Tuesday with an 80 to finish the tournament with a 157. Her round on Tuesday was the top of the day for Evansville.

Wichita State's Gretchen Huhnerkoch finished in second place at the 2011 Hoosier Fall Invitational and helped the Shockers finish seventh out of thirteen teams with a score of 930 (307-311-312). The Burnsville, Minn., native entered the final round tied for fourth and battled cold, rainy conditions on Tuesday to shoot a two-over par 74 and take runner-up honors with a 54-hole score of seven-over par 223 (72-77-74). She finished three shots behind Becca Huffer of #55 Notre Dame. #68 Eastern Michigan was the winner of the tournament with a score of 912 and WSU finished 31 shots ahead of the only other MVC team in the field, Illinois State. ISU's Brianna Cooper’s top-10 finish was her third of the year. Her final round, 1-over-par gave her an 11-over-par for the tournament (79-75-73).
