This week's Missouri Valley Conference golfers of the week are John Danielson of Southern Illinois and Stacey Miller of Illinois State. Danielson took fourth in the UTA Waterchase Invitational, leading SIU to a second-place team finish; and Miller was medalist at the Ross Resorts Invitational, helping ISU take second place as a team.
Four league schools competed at the UTA Waterchase Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Southern Illinois senior John Danielson (Marshalltown, Iowa) finished a career-best fourth place at the 16-team 86-golfer event. Danielson opened the first day with a 1-over 73, and tied a season-best with a 1-under 71. He followed with a 2-over 74 during the final 18 holes on Tuesday to help the Salukis finish in second place after being in 10th after the first 36 holes. SIU's Phillip Collier also carded a top-10 finish in the event, shooting a three-round 22. UTA's Michael Van DeVenter led Arlington to the team title as he finished with a three-round 205 for medalist honors.
Drake (9th), Missouri State (12th) and Creighton (15th) represented the MVC in the tournament. The Bears were led for the third straight tournament by freshman Jordan McLaurin. McLaurin posted rounds of 75-72-80 to finish with a tournament total of 227. He finished tied for 18th place in the last tournament of the fall season for the Bears. Other than Danielson and Collier from SIU, he was the only other MVC golfer to finish in the top 20.
Illinois State's Jeff Kellen tallied his first top-10 finish of the year, firing a 2-over-par, 218 (75-73-70) at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday. Kellen tied for seventh place and led the Redbirds to a tie for fourth place. The tournament was played on the par-71, 6,882-yard Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Illinois State junior Stacey Miller (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic)carded a 9-over-par 225 (76-75-74) to finish with medalist honors at the Ross Resorts Invitational in Southern Pines, N.C. After two rounds of play Monday, Miller was in third place with a 7-over-par 151 (76-75). On Tuesday’s third and final round, Miller tallied a 2-over-par 74. The first-place finish was Miller’s second straight tournament victory. She also won the UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic Oct. 12-14. Miller led the Redbirds to a second-place team finish (937) just behind Nova Southeastern (929). The second-place finish was the Redbirds’ highest finish of their fall campaign.
Three league schools competed at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island, S.C. UNI was the highest-finishing Valley school, taking eighth place with a three-round 310-311-318=939 in the 19-team field. Blair Bonner led the way for the Panthers, tying for eighth overall with a three-round 78-73-77=228. The tournament was played on the Kiawah Island Oak Point Golf Course, laying out at 5,955 yards with a par of 72. Wichita State (15th) and Creighton (17) also were at the tournament.
