ST. LOUIS -- Chelsea Voet of Missouri State University and Brian Dixon of Southern Illinois University Carbondale have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Voet and Dixon were honored for their performances during the period of October 8-14.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A goalie for the Missouri State women’s soccer team, Voet, a senior from Omaha, Nebraska, picked up her league-leading seventh shutout of the season, as the Bears blanked Creighton (1-0 on October 14).
The MVC Goalie of the Week, Voet, who has a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average in exercise and movement science, made five saves to earn her third 1-0 triumph of the campaign. In the process, she continued her dominance at home, as she has not allowed a goal in more than 587 minutes.
A member of the Southern Illinois men’s cross country team, Dixon, a junior from Springfield, Illinois, placed seventh individually at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Illinois, on Friday, October 12, to help the Salukis capture the team title.
Dixon, who has a 3.955 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, ran an 8k time of 24:37 for his fourth individual top 10 finish in as many races.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
