MVC Announces Baseball Scholar-Athlete Teams

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Twelve league baseball players have been named to the 2014 MVC Scholar-Athlete First team, including one unanimous selection, in Illinois State's Paul DeJong, who was also the league's winner for the Elite 18 Award for the sport of baseball. The scholar-athlete teams were voted on by the conference’s baseball sports information contacts and announced by the league office today.

Dallas Baptist earned the most first team selections, including the only 4.00 GPA in Josh Urban and Patriot teammates Daniel Salters and Mike Wesolowski. Indiana State (Landon Curry and Mike Fitzgerald), Missouri State (Dylan Becker and Conor Smith) and Southern Illinois (Sam Coonrod and Tyler Dray) each have two first team honorees. Bradley's Isaac Smith and Evansville's Kevin Kaczmarski round out the first team selections.

Five of the 12 first team spots are held by graduating seniors, while five juniors and two sophomores complete the makeup of the first team.

In all, seven league schools are represented on the first team, with an additional five student-athletes named to the honorable mention team. A total of 35 student-athletes were nominated for scholar-athlete honors.

The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
