TJ McGreevy of Wichita State and Becca Changstrom of Creighton have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. McGreevy and Changstrom were honored for their performances during the period of February 25-March 3. Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. TJ McGreevy made two relief appearances for the Shockers last week and picked up a win and a save. He went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save in 6.1 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Against Arkansas-Little Rock, he came into the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on first and second with two outs and the Shockers winning by one run. He retired seven of the eight batters he faced and struck out three of them to earn his first save of the season. Against Iowa, he pitched four shutout innings of relief and allowed just two hits with no walks and four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. McGreevy holds a 3.22 grade-point average as a sport management major. At the UTA Maverick Invitational this week, Changstrom built upon her impressive play of last weekend. The junior right-hander pitched three-complete games, registering 19 strikeouts through 22 innings pitched resulting in a pair of wins and a 1.91 ERA for the weekend. In an extra-inning victory over No. 21 Tulsa, Changstrom allowed just three runs and seven hits while racking up 10 K’s – one shy of her season high. She held opposing batters to a .193 average at the dish and allowed only six walks and six earned runs at the tourney. Changstrom leads the Valley at 8.03 strikeouts per game. A chemistry major, Changstrom currently carries a 3.846 GPA. To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period. |
