For the fifth time in league history, three Missouri Valley Conference baseball teams have been selected as part of the field of 64 teams to play for the 2012 College World Series national title. This marks first time since 2007 that multiple MVC teams were invited to the dance, and the first time since 2000 that three league teams were selected. Three conference teams were a part of the 1999, 1995 and 1990 NCAA Championship fields.
2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship winner Creighton will be joined by at-large selections Indiana State and Missouri State in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Baseball Championship. Regional round matchups will be played from June 1-4.
CREIGHTON
Creighton (26-28) is making its 10th overall NCAA appearance after making an unlikely repeat and running the table in the State Farm MVC Baseball Championship to earn the league’s automatic bid. The Bluejays will take on No. 2 national seed and host UCLA (42-14), in a first-round matchup in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday, June 1. Other teams in the regional include New Mexico (36-22) and San Diego (40-15).
The Bluejays are 13-18 all-time in postseason play in school history, including 5-12 since the 1991 team advanced to the only College World Series in school history. The 2012 team will be looking to become the first in Creighton history to make it to a super regional, as the format was not set up when the Jays won the West I Regional in the 1991 season, advancing directly to the CWS.
INDIANA STATE
Indiana State (41-17) is making its eighth overall NCAA appearance (first since 1995), earning an at-large bid after winning its first outright regular-season title in school history. The Sycamores earned a No. 3 seed and will take on Cal State Fullerton (35-19) in a first-round matchup in Eugene, Ore. Other teams in the regional include host and No. 5 national seed Oregon (42-17) and Austin Peay (38-22).
The Sycamores are 8-14 all-time in postseason play, including 4-6 since the 1986 team advanced to the only College World Series in program history.
MISSOURI STATE
Missouri State (39-20) earned its ninth-ever NCAA Tournament berth, returning to the Big Dance for the first time since 2003. The Bears earned the No. 3 seed and will square off with UCF (43-15) on Friday, June 1, in Coral Gables, Fla. The other matchup features host Miami (FL) (36-21) and Stony Brook (46-11).
The Bears are 13-15 all-time in postseason play, having won at least two games in each of their last five trips to a regional. In their last NCAA appearance in 2003, Missouri State went 3-1 against Coastal Carolina and host Nebraska to claim the Lincoln Regional, then swept Ohio State in the Super Regional to advance to the school’s first College World Series.
