2010 Scholar-Athlete Teams
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Thirteen league baseball players have been named to the 2010 MVC Scholar-Athlete First team, including five unanimous selections, as voted on by the conference's baseball sports information directors and announced by the league office today. Illinois State's Ryan Court earned his second first team honor, and was joined on the first team by uncontested selections Alex Acheson of Evansville, Nathan Forer of Southern Illinois and Wichita State's Jordan Cooper and Cody Lassley.
Wichita State earned the most first team selections, as Shocker teammates Bret Bascue and Logan Hoch join Cooper and Lassley. Indiana State and Evansville each had three members, including Sycamores Kyle Burnam, Ben Ferrell, and Luke Fieser, while Acheson is joined by Purple Aces' teammates Trentt Copeland and Keegan Dennis. Creighton's T.J. Roemmich, a three-time selection after earning honorable mention honors in both 2009 and 2008, rounds out this year's first team.
Nine of the 13 first team spots are held by graduating seniors, with three sophomores and one junior completing the makeup of the first team.
In all, six league schools are represented on the first team, with an additional two student-athletes named to the honorable mention team. A total of 25 student-athletes were nominated for scholar-athlete honors.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
