INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The field of 64 teams competing for the 2010 NCAA Baseball Division Baseball Championship was announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. The Illinois State Redbirds, winners of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, earned a No. 3 seed and will head to Louisville, Ky., to face No. 2 seed Vanderbilt on Friday, June 4. Host Louisville and Saint Louis will join the Redbirds and Commodores in the four-team regional.
Illinois State will look to avenge a loss to Vanderbilt earlier this season, as the Redbirds fell to the Commodores, 9-2, on March 6, in Nashville, Tenn. The Redbirds are heading to just their third NCAA Tournament and their first since 1994.
Of the 292 championship eligible Division I institutions that sponsor baseball, 28 teams won at least 40 Division I contests - including Wichita State - all of which are in the field of 64 except Liberty, Southeastern La., Utah Valley and the Shockers.
Each of the 16 regional sites features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 4, to Monday, June 7. The winners of each regional will advance to the Super Regional round June 11-14. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on NCAA.com, Monday, June 7 at approximately 11 p.m. (ET).
The 64th Men's College World Series begins play Saturday, June 19 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. A complete bracket, including records and match-ups, is attached.
