PDF Release - Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week (May 17, 2012) ST. LOUIS -- Ty Blach of Creighton University and Malaikah Love of Southern Illinois University have been selected Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Blach and Love were honored for their performance during the period of May 7-13. Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. A pitcher for the Creighton baseball team, Blach, a junior from Centennial, Colorado, went 2-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average in 10 innings, as the Bluejays defeated Nebraska, 8-1, on May 8 and Dallas Baptist, 4-1, on May 11. Blach, who has a 3.865 cumulative grade-point average in business, recorded his first nine-inning complete game as a Bluejay by giving up an unearned run against Dallas Baptist. The southpaw struck out five batters and allowed just one free pass in his team-leading fifth win of the season. A member of the Southern Illinois track and field team, Love, a senior from Carbondale, Illinois, repeated as league champion in the triple jump at the State Farm MVC Championship on May 13 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita, Kansas. Love, who has a 3.477 cumulative grade-point average in dental hygiene, established an SIU record with a jump of 43 feet, 3.25 inches -- becoming the first Saluki ever to clear 43 feet in the event. She also garnered All-MVC honors with a second-place finish in the long jump. She completed her SIU career having won four MVC outdoor titles and five indoor league crowns. To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
