Southern Illinois became the first team in the 25-year history of the Missouri Valley Football Conference to win eight conference games in a season (although the opportunity to go 8-0 has only existed this year and last).  SIU is only the 10th team in conference history to go undefeated in league play.

Seven of the league's nine teams are in action this weekend, and three of the four contests involving MVFC schools have post-season implications.  Playoff selections will be made between 2-2:30 pm CT on ESPNews on Sunday, Nov. 22.  The league has had at least two playoff teams every year since 1995, but more than two only twice.  Three teams represented the conference in 2006 and four teams in 2003.  A league team has reached the semifinals in 11 of the past 13 years, which includes two national crowns.

Perfect Seasons in the League
Southern Illinois (8-0) joined nine others in recording a perfect conference season when the Salukis beat Missouri State last Saturday.  In 2007, UNI (6-0) became the ninth team in league history to win the conference title with an undefeated record.  Before that, Southern Illinois (2004) was the last to do it.  Illinois State (1999), Western Illinois (1988 and 1997) and UNI (1985, 1987, 1994, and 1996) have also gone unbeaten.  SIU is the only to go 7-0 (2004); UNI was 5-0 in 1985 and 1996; and the others were 6-0.

Title Town
In the league's first 25 seasons, UNI has won or shared the title a league-best 14 times.  Western Illinois and Southern Illinois have the second-most Valley Football titles, with five each

Behind the Eight Ball
The Missouri Valley Football Conference has had at least two eight-game winners for 15-straight seasons.  The last time the league had more than two eight-game winners in the same season was in 2006 (Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Youngstown State).  In 24 previous Valley Football seasons, 46 teams have won eight or more games during the regular season, and all but five have made the playoffs:  UNI (in 1989 and 1999), WIU (in 1994), and YSU (in 2001 and 2005) are the only league teams to win eight and not make it.

Harbor Closes Out Career
Bears' All-America TE Clay Harbor closed out a stellar career with a career-high 11 pass receptions Saturday at SIU, collecting 111 receiving yards and his 10th career TD reception on the final play of his career.  He also extended his reception streak to 33 straight games, which tied a Bears career record and is the fourth-best streak in the league's 25-year history.  His final career totals of 150 receptions for 1,906 yards rank No. 1 and No. 4, in school history.  While his 1,906 match the league record for receiving yards by a tight end (Rodney Porter, Indiana State, 1986-89).

Karim Moving Up List
Southern Illinois' Deji Karim is on pace to challenge the league's single-season record for all-purpose yards.  Karim leads the league now with 1,849 all-purpose yards, and will likely crack the 2,000-yard plateau on Saturday at SEMO.  Here's the 10 previous MVFC players to crack 2,000 all-purpose yards for a season:

Wrapping It Up
Southern Illinois travels to Southeast Missouri State this Saturday in the last regular-season non-conference game for the MVFC in 2009.  The league has combined for an 11-15 non-conference record, but that includes nine games at FBS sites.  The league is an impressive 10-5 against teams from the FCS.

Four Score ...
RB Pat Paschall rushed for four touchdowns in North Dakota State's win at Indiana State, marking just the second player to rush for four scores this year (Cliffton Gordon of Illinois State did it against Austin Peay).  Only five players in league history (WIU's Travis Glasford did it twice) have rushed for more than 4 TDs in a game previously.
