Missouri State Sweeps MVC Golfer of the Week Awards

This week's Missouri Valley Conference golfers of the week are Jack Courington of Missouri State and Kelsey Welber of Missouri State, giving the the Bears a sweep of this week's honors.

WOMEN'S RECAPS
  Sophomore Kelsey Welber fired a one-over-par 72 on Sunday (Mar. 7) to lead the Missouri State women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the 18-team Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz.  Welber's round was the tournament's best of the day on a rain-soaked afternoon that saw the Bears shoot 308 and move up two spots after posting 311-307-308--926 for 54 holes.  Welber tied for ninth in the tournament, shooting 76-76-72--224  Michigan was the wire-to-wire tournament winner, shooting 291-287-303--881 to win by 14 over second-place Minnesota, which had 895.  Michigan's Ashley Bauer took medalist honors with 68-68-73--209.  Bradley and Southern Illinois also competed in the tournament and were led by Keegan Ryan (t19th) and Margaret Gilley (t28th), respectively.

MEN'S RECAPS
  Junior Jack Courington fired a nine-under-par 63 Sunday (Mar. 7) to lead the Missouri State men's golf team to a 13th-place finish at the 23-team USF Invitational in Dade City, Fla.  Courington's round at Lake Jovita Country Club is a new school record, breaking the old mark of 65 shared by Todd Laney (2005), Jason Whitesell (1998) and Jon Rogers (1998).  He was tied for 53rd entering the final round, but moved up to a sixth-place tie with his record-setting round, finishing the tournament with 73-76-63--212, four-under-par.  As a team, MSU shot 296-300-284--880 and moved up three spots Sunday.  Florida Southern College captured the team title with 288-281-283--852, five better than second-place Middle Tennessee State, which shot 288-286-283--857.

The Creighton men's golf team finished tied for 14th at the Don Benbow North/South Invitational on Tuesday. The two-day, two-round event was the first spring tournament for the Jays.  Creighton used rounds of 315 and 316 for a 631 total. Laval shot a 573 to win the 15-team event contested on the par-71, 6,504-yard Jacksonville Beach Country Club.  The Jays' best finisher was freshman John Rasmussen, who tied for 37th place. Rasmussen got off to a good start with a 2-over-par 73 in the first round and added a seven-over-par 80 in his second round for a 9-over total of 153. Mathieu Gingras from Laval was the individual champion. He posted rounds of 68 and 67.

Southern Illinois finished in 10th place overall at the Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday.  SIU finished with a 54-hole score of 906 (+42).  The tournament, hosted by Samford University, was played at the 7,000-yard, par-72 Limestone Springs Golf Club.  Patrick Scheil led the Salukis, fueled by a second round score of 67 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Scheil ended at two over par (78-67-73=218).  Meanwhile, all five University of Evansville golfers finished within eight strokes of one another Tuesday afternoon, leading the Purple Aces to a sixth place finish.  Andrew Luo was Evansville's top overall finisher, in 20th place out of 75 golfers with a 54-hole total of 8-over-par 224.
