Eight Valley Men’s Soccer Players Earn Academic All-District Honors

Eight Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer student-athletes earned have been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District men's soccer teams.  Creighton, Drake, Evansville and Missouri State are represented on the teams.  Players who earned first-team all-district will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot. 

Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Academic All-District Teams:

Mike Luttrull, Evansville
Robby Lynch, Evansville

DISTRICT 7
Ethan Finlay, Creighton
Calvin Clark, Drake
Matt Kuhn, Drake
Kevin Shrout, Drake
Brian Wurst, Drake
Heath Melugin, Missouri State

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.  Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable).

CREIGHTON
Sophomore Ethan Finlay of the Creighton men's soccer team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII First-Team as voted on by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  The forward owns a 3.31 cumulative grade point average in an undeclared field of study.

Finlay, from Marshfield, Wis., currently leads the Bluejays with six goals and 15 points, ranking second in the Missouri Valley Conference in goals and points per game.  His four game-winning goals lead the team and the MVC, while he now has eight career game-winning goals among his 12 career scores.

DRAKE
Four members of the Drake Bulldogs men's soccer team were tabbed as first team CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America all-district VII selections.

Named to the first team to remain in contention for national Academic All-America laurels are junior midfielder Matt Kuhn (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South), senior midfielder Kevin Shrout (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) and senior defenders Calvin Clark (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Brian Wurst (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill South).

An accounting major, Kuhn maintains a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.  He has started all 16 games for Drake and leads the team in goals (4), points (13) and game-winning goals (2).

A management and marketing major, Shrout, who was named to the Hermann Award Watch List, owns a 3.4 GPA.  He has started all 15 games he has played in and leads the team in assists (5) and shots (32), while adding two goals.

Majoring in corporate finance, Clark boasts a 3.73 GPA.  Starting all 16 games for Drake, Clark has recorded two goals and added an assist from his starting defender's slot.  He is an anchor of a Bulldog defensive unit that has posted seven shutouts.

A management major, Wurst maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA.  He has started all 16 games at his defender position for the Bulldogs, who have recorded seven shutouts this season.

EVANSVILLE
University of Evansville juniors Robby Lynch and Mike Luttrull have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First-Team as voted on by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Evansville is the only school with two members on the 11-man District V All-Academic First Team.

Lynch, from Carmel, Ind., and a graduate of Carmel High School, has a 3.58 grade point average and is majoring in exercise science.  He ranks fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference in assists (5), sixth in points (13) and seventh in goals (4). Luttrull, from Indianapolis and a graduate of Avon High School, has a 3.82 GPA and is majoring in accounting.  He ranks second in the league in game-winning goals (2), third in goals (5) and 10th in shots (30).  Both have been starters since their freshman season.

MISSOURI STATE
Missouri State men's soccer sophomore Heath Melugin was named to the COSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII First Team.  Melugin has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average as a cell and molecular biology major.

On the field, Melugin has scored four goals this season, second most on the team behind Paradise's five.  Two of Melugin's goals were game-winners.  He has also recorded one assist.  His 24 shots taken are third on the squad. 

Last season, Melugin was second on the team with eight points (3 G, 2A).  For his efforts, he was named to the MVC all-freshman team.
