2009 State Farm MVC Women's Soccer Championship

Illinois State's Jessica Carlson scored the lone goal of the match at the 51:00 mark to lift Illinois State to its second State Farm MVC Championship (2003, 2009).  The goal was Carlson's league-leading 11th of the season.  ISU's Sasha Reiber recorded the shutout.  The Redbirds had 15 shots to Creighton's 7.  The Bluejays ended their season with a 13-6-2 -- the 13 wins the most in Bruce Erickson's coaching career.  Illinois State will represent the MVC in the NCAA Championship, with pairings announced on Monday (7 p.m. CT on ESPNews).

Sunday's match marked the fifth meeting in tournament play between Creighton and Illinois State, with the last three coming in the title game.  Creighton beat ISU in 1997 in quarterfinal action, and beat the Redbirds in 2002 in the title game.  The teams tied in 2003 and 2007, with ISU advancing on PKs (5-4) in 2003, and the Bluejays taking a 4-3 edge in PKs in 2007.

Both semifinals were available on MVC LIVE - the conference's videostreaming package.  While the championship match on Sunday is on the MVC TV Network.  Live stats and video are available for the State Farm MVC Tournament semifinals, while the championship match will be on the MVC TV Network, with live stats provided by Creighton.  Scott Warmann and Dave Dir will provide commentary for the semifinals on MVC LIVE, while Sean Wheelock and Dir are the on-air talent for the title game.

The title match will be shown live at 1 p.m. on Fox Sports Midwest in the state of Illinois, Fox Sports Indiana, Fox College Sports, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and Metro Sports - the league's production company which is based in Kansas City, Mo.   The match will also be seen live on alternate cable system channels on Cox Media (channel 122 in Omaha, Neb.), Mediacom (channel 22 in Des Moines, Iowa and channel 22 in Springfield, Mo.) and Charter Media (Channel 8 in St. Louis, Mo.).

FRIDAY (Nov. 6) -- Illinois State's Jessica Carlson scored the lone goal of the match at the 59:47 mark to lift the Illinois State to its fourth title game in school history (2002, 2003, 2007).  Shannon Eccleston had an initial shot on goal that slipped through keeper Kourtney Arnold's hands, and Carlson finished it off for the game-winner.   The goal was Carlson's 10th of the season.  ISU's Sasha Reiber recorded two saves to notch the shutout.  The Redbirds had a decisive edge in shots, notching 18 to Drake's 5.  Bulldog keeper Arnold had seven saves.  In the second match, Creighton's Laura Nasseri scored the golden goal at the 97:30 mark to lift the Bluejays to the title game.  She was set up by Erin Gunther and Brittney Neumann.  The Bluejays got on top early with a goal from Beth Fyles at the 16:52 mark, but Missouri State's Jenna Dobkins knotted the score at 1-1 with just under eight minutes to go in regulation.

SUNDAY (Nov. 1) -- Host Drake ended Indiana State's season with a 3-1 victory in the opening round of the State Farm MVC Tournament.  The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the 15th minute, when Elizabeth Woerle scored her eighth goal of the season on a shot from the top of the penalty box.   Brittney Neumann's team-leading seventh goal of the season gave Creighton a 1-0 victory over Evansville in Sunday afternoon's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Quarterfinals at Morrison Stadium.

TOURNAMENT INFO -- The 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship is being played at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.   Creighton is hosting the championship.  Evansville is the defending tournament champion.

NCAA TOURNAMENT -- The winner of the championship earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.  Pairings for the NCAA Championship (64 teams) will be announced Monday, Nov. 9.
